I have been in the area, and up a few trails near there, and pictures don't even begin to capture where you really are and how immense everything is. It's amazing. Great pictures, and thank you for sharing. I now live on the east coast and desperately miss Colorado every day.

Spring will be more challenging. In September snow is at it's minimum for the year, not so much in spring. E.g. Imogene (13,114 ft) doesn't even get plowed until late May - IF they can. So plan your timing carefully. Even if the trails get plowed, the snowmelt will make the trails muddy and much more challenging.

My truck has 2" BOSS level coilovers and a 1" add-a-leaf in the rear. Tires are 34" (285/75R17) Toyos. You WILL want 10 ply tires on most of the trails! A lot of the switchbacks are exposed - SHARP - rocks. You will really want to have a locker, it helps a lot.

You will also enjoy having a guide book. I got "Colorado Backroads and 4 Wheel Drive Trails" by Charles A. Wells. Very helpful. Oh, and one more thing, if you think that you don't need a GPS, think again; and I can't tress this enough: your cell phone's GPS will not work up there! No signal for many miles. Have a great time!

You are so right about pictures just not even coming close to representing what it's really like up there. It is truly amazing. The truck performed awesomely. I will say though, that there is noticeable turbo lag at 12,000+ ft. It was a weird feeling, but once the turbos spooled up there was nothing the truck wouldn't do.

So, I got called out to help a buddy get himself un-stuck. Ended up getting myself stuck and spending the night. Got out the next morning and got hit with a $200 ticket. Found out where he was wasn't so legal. Needles to say I won't be going back there again. I pulled out the Silverado and the 250 after 2 jeeps got me out.

That looks like a pretty serious pit. Hope your buddy at least bought a few rounds for getting him out and getting you a ticket in the process.

It was some sticky stuff that's for sure. Him and the guy the got stuck to begin with filled my tank for me and I'm waiting to hear back from them about a little help paying for the ticket. I'd rather have that than a belly full of beer.

He'd have to buy a lot of beer for that $200 ticket.
