Default larger tires = different gearing?

new to this forum but not to the f-150, had an 04 for a few years and have since moved on to a titan, but after dealing with that toilet i'm thinking about coming back to the f-150 or maybe even a 250. either way i want to put a small lift or level in the truck and go with some 35's for the summer and probably some 33's for the winter where i will be towing a 2 place sled trailer. will i need to regear for the 35's? i know it will help with power, but if i decide not to gear will i end up blowing the rearend and then have to gear it anyways? thanks.

Well I was gonna say there shutting down the titans after 2010, and glad to hear your switching back. Unless you got some serious $ saved up I wouldn't suggest the 250, don't get me wrong my dad has one and it's a beast of a truck that is fun to drive and awesome for work, but has a big price tag and the mileage is pretty bad for a diesel. The 6.0 gets way better mileage it seems but of course not as much power. With a 150 yes you may want to consider regearing it if towing a lot or often but you don't need to regear for 35's on a diesel, especially not the 08 f250

i'm only going to be towing a mx of 10 times a year. i only carry 2 sleds in the trailer and once in a while a third in the bed. its only a small 10 foot clamshell that doesn't weigh anything. as it stands now it will be a second car/truck.

Do you have a lift?

What gears are in it now?
If 3:73. 4:10 you would be ok with the 33s. 35s will like a 4:10 or better.

My speedo (not my swim suit) is off by 4 mph with the 33s and 3:55 gears. MPG are not that great with this ratio and 33s.

I've been running 315x70x17's (35x12.5x17) for over 3 yrs with a 3.73 rear end and a programmer with no problems. The 33's I have 285x70x17 feel like the stock tires compared to the 35's.

you're not going to damage the rearend by running 35's with 3:55's. However, the tranny will feel some pain over time depending on how you drive it, and the extra "grunt" needed to turn the bigger tires with stock gears will hurt fuel economy. You will likely notice the truck "gear hunting" between 3rd and overdrive much more than it did stock, especially while towing. In fact, when towing you probably will just have to leave the o/d off completely unless it's flat ground and a real light trailer. The extra resistance will make your torque converter work harder and raise your fluid temps. All of these things will lead to premature wearing of the tranny, with your right foot being the deciding factor of how much extra stress it gets. 4:56 gears are what you need for 35's, 4:10's for 33's. keep in mind that if you swap gears, and then re-install your stock tires for the winter, your rpm's will be a few hundred higher, and you'll burn a little more gas on a long trip than with your 35's.
