.... I can't look back at the comment someone posted but the JK has to have a higher tow rating than 1500 lbs. I watched one tow it's broken down Toyota tow vehicle on the trailer a few months ago..
My tj pulls my 4k+ lb boat easily.
What it can tow, and what it's rated to tow are two separate figures. Sure I could tow a lot more than 1500lbs, can I safely stop though? It all depends on the gearing. The unlimited is rated approx 1000lbs more than the 2dr model with the same gearing. A 2dr with the worst stock gearing (3.21) is rated at 1000lbs. 3.73 gearing in the 2door sport was rated at 1500lbs. It's really is sad in my opinion. I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable putting more stress on the 4 bolts that hold the receiver than that rated capacity either, but to each their own.

Fear not though, with the new pentastar, they now rate all the 2door models @ 2000lbs towing... Not sure if I can post links, but the information is provided right on Jeeps website, select the model and check the towing specs.

Default Best of Both Worlds

I'll be honest... i've done things in both my Jeep and my 2012 F-150 that most people would never dream of doing. I had the Off-Road 4x4 package on the F-150 with the 3.73's and electronic locker and beat it to hell but it went anywhere i pointed it. My 84 CJ-7 goes even more places but it's like cheating since it has front and rear lockers, 35's and lower gear ratio. So if you look at it that way maybe if your budget would allow it go for a lower modeled F-150 purely for all the capabilities of it and then get yourself an older weekend warrior Jeep! I since traded in that F-150 and have a 2014 STX 2wd 5.0 since i don't really need the 4x4 capabilities and it frees up more money i can drop into my CJ which is purpose built for off-road and rock crawling. But yes the CJ isn't any fun for daily driving so the F-150 made more sense and doubles as my tow rig for the Jeep to get it to where i want to play. If you do go with a Jeep get 2013 - newer make sure it has the 3.6L motor not the 3.7L, or older 4.0L or even older like my 4.2L but with the 4.2L you'd want to convert it to fuel injection.

you do realize a stock 4.0L TJ is only rated to tow 2000lbs, right?

towing a 4000lb boat with a TJ is reckless and STUPID. you are putting yourself, your passengers, and everyone elses lives around you at risk.

Default Wrangler Versus F150

Current and past owner of a number of F250's, 150's now an F150 4X4 2013 Lariat w/lockers along with numerous Jeeps (YJ CJ) an currently a factory ordered 2008 Wrangler Sahara w/limited slip(s), winch and 34" rubber on air suspension. I not only have raced cross country, I've done lots of serious 4X4 in all types of terrain in the US starting in 1970 with a new International Scout. Having said that, comparing a 150 and a Wrangler is like comparing a horse to a camel. Dependent upon what your use perimeters are, either are good vehicles, HOWEVER, both have their niche's. To own one over the other breaks down to practicality or intended use. Neither will do all or accomplish all in one fell swoop. First you must determine by priority what are important factors to you, then compare each. Easiest way is to make a quick 1-10 scale of important uses, apply each vehicle a rating or number of potential performance in that particular field. Once you've completed all priorities and rated each of the two candidate vehicles, add each column up. That gives you a quick and dirty assessment of your particular interests and which vehicle is more suited to you. No/Yes?

bringing back an old thread because i enjoyed reading it. Im sure the OP has chosen but maybe others will also still like to share their opinions.

like many others said, i will always be a jeep person and it is a lifestyle and only those people do understand. I think a lot of people buy jeeps, especially jks and complain about them not realizing what a jeep really is. My little 2.5L 97 wrangler has gotten me anywhere i needed to go. I take that thing on roadtrips and any terrain and never worry about it breaking down. lifted and on 35s and used off road, nothing hardly breaks underneath. I bought a 05 f150 which is now on 37s and ive had more suspension and 4x4 problems in 6 months then the jeep has the last 6 years. Could be bad luck with the truck, who knows. But I feel like the jeep is made to be buila and beat more so than the truck.

of course like others have said, there are comfort differences. My jeep has never had AC, but i dont need it all summer with the top and doors off. I live in new england, so we get pretty harsh winters and hot summers. I drove that thing every winter. but now i have the truck i prefer to drive that in -11 weather than the jeep. but its still a tough decision everyday before work. it is small inside, but im only 5'4 so i fit just fine! (one of many good things being a girl! lol). I love the simply inside. it really is preference. if done right, you can own both an f150 and older jeep. but hands down, the jeep will always be the most fun vehicle ever to me and no other vehicle can make me smile like the jeep driving with the top and doors off. And the ruggid side of it will keep me always owning a TJ and never a JK, to me they just seem to luxurious for a jeep and too many electronics to be going through massive mudholes with. And remember, any vehicle modifed is going to be big, loud, and somewhat rough.

my tj and f150

Truck never would have made it down this trail to get to the river

I am really starting to despise the JK. they are awesome jeeps in their own right. to be able to do a spacer lift and clear 35's is definitely worth mentioning. But the ease of modification along with their sheer popularity has created a monster.

I saw a meme on facebook not too long ago that fits the JK perfectly, with all the neon lights and glowing rings around the headlights, big wheels, lots of LED off road lights for a rig that never gets wheeled (much less at night) the JK has become the honda civic of the current car age.

couldnt of said it better! I agree. Ya they are awesome for their own reasons. In addition to being able to take the top off, doors off you get way more cargo space, better seats and there are gadgets. But, it seems to me that the only people i ever see or know wheeling a JK are serious offroaders online who completely modified the entire vehicle. Others tend to be a lot of soccer moms. Thats what i call it, "now a day soccer mom vehicles". Theyre expensive, so to buy a jeep and use it as a SUV and take the top off twice a summer just doesn't make sense to me. And to anybody who loves the JK..i don't mean any harshness about it, but as a TJ owner, i have a certain idea for a jeep and the JK doesn't really fill it.

That's funny. Jeeps have long been fashion accessories here in Utah. YJ, then TJ, then they new ones (I haven't kept up on my model codes since I don't "Jeep" anymore ...), all the same.

But go down to Moab, you will see some JKs that will blow your mind, both in how they look and what they can do.

I'm not sure if you've made a decision yet but if you're driving 600 miles a week to work I'd definitely go with the F-150 for comfort. I know a lot of guys who get Jeeps and then realize they don't like them as a daily driver. Best of luck to you.
