Jeep Wrangler vs F-150
#21
I will agree with most people here. Jeeps are better off road vehicles, but if you are planning on camping and you have a family, then the f150 is the way to go. Also, the f150 will be more comfortable on the road if you drive that much. I had a jeep and loved it, except trying to get all the camping gear in it with a family of 4.

I couldn't decide between them, so I kept the Jeep and got a pretty basic F150. It is the best of both worlds for me...
The Jeep is very tough and capable off road, a ton of fun. Mine is slightly modified. The ride is nice but the mileage sucks....
The F150 rides great, decent mileage, very useful.

Having said that, my factory ordered TJ was trail prepped nearly right away and not used much as a daily driver when I was working other than a few years when I preferred that to driving my primo '91 Mustang GT to work and leaving it parked outside all day. Now, its somewhat reversed in retirement 'cus I run the jeep on local mountain and desert trails every week while also using it for errands in my small town. Bottom line, it isn't and never was a commuter vehicle and now has 73k total miles in 15+ yrs.
OTOH, my new truck is a delight to drive but seems cumbersome around town and in parking lots - even compared to the Nissan Frontier I recently sold. I continue to "tweak" my FX4 equipment config for local FS unpaved roads but nothing at all like the narrow, brushy, rocky terrain we routinely take our jeeps on. Some call it "desert pinstriping" but sagebrush pales compared to what Manzanita does to paint!

F150 wins for me!
I got a 4 door hard top wrangler brand new in '11. Loved it! Hoisted the top and took off the doors regularly. We tent camped a ton. Packing our camping gear and two 95 lb dogs sucked! I got a '14 FX4 crew ecoboost in January and love it even more! The ride and power is amazing. The covered bed is fantastic for gear! We put the back seats up and dog beds down and they have their own room for long trips! I do miss taking the tops and doors off, but that is worth the trade imo. I put 45k miles on that jeep with no mods - except the black wheels - and got $500 more than what I paid in the trade! But now we were able to get a 35' trailer and take camping to the next level. I haven't looked back and I know my FX4 is still capable if I need to venture off road.

I've owned and wheeled both trucks and Jeeps. Quite different animals IMO. Hard to say which is better.
But consider this -- anything that you set up to be able to wheel decently is gonna suck on the road and be incredibly expensive to drive 600 miles a week. Aggressive tires, suspension, lower gears, all of that really cut into ride quality and, if you're paying the fuel bills, fuel economy significantly. My Jeeps w/ 35" tires never got better than 15 mpg under any condition.
Plus, consider that if you are out wheeling it hard, you will break something. Ford, Jeep, GM, Toyota, they'll all break if you're doing it 'right.' Can you afford to break a vehicle you have to drive 600 miles for work? I've been there on that, breaking my Jeep and being w/o a vehicle until I could fix it. Really causes problems!
My suggestion -- buy either as a toy and get an eco car of your choice for your daily driving!

I have both, love both!
I have a 2011 JKU, RK2.5flex, bilsteins, Nitto trail grapplers 35x12.5x18, 3.73s, auto and I have a 2013 F150 4x4screw. Everyday I walk out of my house and choose what to drive to work, it's a great feeling!! The f150 is far more comfortable has a very smooth ride, and better gas mileage but the jeep is a jeep, I can't explain why I probably choose the jeep more often but all I can say is that it's because I'm a jeep driver, it's something that can't be explained and certainly can't be convinced, as my wife will attest, she prefers the truck all the time.

I have both as well. Just cannot get rid of the Jeep. I've had it for over 10 years, I've built it, it's become mine and my creation, but the gas mileage sucks, it's noisy, it rides rough, no a/c, blah blah blah. But it's mine. I've got alot of busted knuckles, sweat and hard work in it. So I get what you're saying.....and all it took was for my wife to drive it for 15 minutes this summer to pick up pizza and she said "I don't want you to get rid of the Jeep, I forgot how much I liked it"

Well travistyler29. I can come at this subject from both points of view, since I own one of each. Sportster pretty well hit the nail square on. I have an 04 Wrangler Unlimited. That little sucker will go through just about anything and takes a beating without a hiccup. I use abuse and pretty much neglect it, except for regular oil changes and general maintenance. It has 115k miles on it and it has given me no trouble. The worst thing that's happened is a burned out fan switch. Oh and the CD player is a bit touchy about offroad stuff. My wife bought the Jeep used with about 7000 miles on it so we have really had over 100k trouble free miles. I use it on my hunting land in the north part of WI, 77 acres of hills, rocks, sand, swamp and regular logging trails. I have never had it stuck. Not stupid enough to go in the real soupy cedar swamp stuff, but it will go through wet 18 inch deep sand and muck.
We bought the '12 F-150 crew cab because my 16 yr old got way to big to ride in the back seat of the Jeep. Our Wrangler is the Unlimited edition that gives just a bit more leg room, if you set the rear seat on the further back setting. It also has about a foot more room behind the seat than the standard Wrangler. That is still nowhere near enough room to pack wife, kid, dog, grandma, grandma's dog,and a weekends worth of clothes, food and hunting gear. I always had to pull a trailer when the whole crew went, and even with that, we were packed in tight. I do not know how the new Jeeps would stack up either. I know that allot of the bodywork on the new ones is plastic, as mine is all steel, except for the plastic fender flares. I have backed the Jeep into a few trees. Steel bumpers are friggin awesome.
The F-150 with the topper on the 5.6 foot bed swallows all the gear and then some, and we ride up front in comfort. The truck actually gets better fuel mileage than the Jeep. I have the V8 version. I haven't had a chance to tow a trailer with the truck yet but I haven't had the need. I would be a little nervous to take my truck into some of the areas on my property that I take the Jeep. First of all because it might not fit, and right now it's far too pretty to be bouncing off of trees and rocks. Some of my trails are pretty darn narrow. That's where the Jeep shines.
I don't know if this helped your quandary any, but you really are comparing to very different vehicles. BTW I drive my Jeep to work everyday too, it's just too much fun not to beat on.

i own both. like others already said they are two very different vehicles. both are lifted on 35s. both get crappy miliage. each have their pros and cons. it just comes down to what you really want to do with it. the jeeps are capable as f***, ive gone trough places my truck could only dream of. but even on the jku model (4 door) space is limited. i went on a camping trip with my family this past summer and we had a hard time fitting all the gear in it (tent, cooler, small stove etc,) the second trip i took the f150, got everything in it plus my dog and a dirtbike + it was a more confortable ride.
in my case i need the f150 to pull our boat, I think if i didnt have a boat i can maybe ditch the f150 although the bed does come in handy a few times a year. also the f150 has the extra seat in the middle if you ever need to carry a 6th passenger. (only on xlt models i believe)
