I like being able to shift into 2Lo and back a trailer up nice and slow.

I ask because I have a 2wd 97 f150 and I love to go offroading, but as of right now I have been going in my buddy's lifted cherokee because I am nervous about taking my 2wd truck out there.

I hardly ever use my 4x4 when off roading cuz 2wd drive is alot more fun, as long as you have a good set of all terrain or mud tires there ain't much the trucks can't crawl through and if you cant thats when the 4x4 goes in, but the guys are right it is good for the truck to lock it in 4x4 and ride down a dirt road or something smooth once or twice a moth to make sure everything is turning and working properly.
