Diff Gears
Hey guys
There are soo many posts about Fords and 33" and 35" tires and level kits and lift kits. But no one talks about gears. Am I to believe that the gears in the F150 are good from stock size to 35" ?? That seems hard to believe. Or do people just leave with the change in power / gas / mileage and everything?
If gears should be considered to be more than an after thought, what are some of the better upgrades out there?
Thanks

I think most people will say as a rule of thumb (*Just an opion not a scientific fact)
4.56 for 35's -37's
4.88 for 37's- 40's
Depending on what your truck came with you either have 3.55 or 3.73. If you have 3.73 you could run 35's and not have a huge power issue.
When I knew I was going to go to 37's I had a CAI, Power chip, and 4.88 gears installed before I put the new wheels on the truck.

i have 3.55 gears and an open diff. i did experience power loss since the 6" lift and 35s, but unexpectedly the truck is performing fine on and offroad. Nonetheless, i do face some difficulties if its a high dune or deep dips. Now i have considered the gears and LS diff, and from what i have read in the forums 4.56 gears are satisfying with 35s and will regain the power loss.

Doing gears is kind of like doing 22" rims and tires. A chunk of change for the leisure trucker but necessary. Maybe even the complete axle is 4 the hearty. LOL

I you are thinking of 33-35" tires I wouldn't re-gear... The power loss is minimal... Plus if you don't tow heavy, drive like a bat outta hell, mud often ect. then there is no need.. I think the main reason people re-gear is to take some of the strain off the transmission...

I am wondering too. I have 37's on my 2007 FX4 and I have a set of 4.56's ready to be installed but some of my friends say I should get 4.88's. I just don't want the motor screaming at 75 mph on the freeway.

my 2005 Fx4 with 4.88's on 37x12.5R17's did great on the freeway. I cant remember what my RPMs wear at when I was going 75, but I want to say around 3k (im not sure). When I had to get up and go to pass people I felt sluggish even with the 4.88s. That issue could have been with the edge power chip being on a econ mode tho.
