clunking noises while in 4x4

Default clunking noises while in 4x4

i have a 90 f150 4x4 5 speed and i was parked and put the truck in 4hi and tried to back up and heard a loud clunking noise kinda sounded like sumthing was gettin into a bind and when i tried to go forward it didnt wanna go anyone knows wats the problem any help would be great thanks

I have a 2004 f150 5.4l 4x4 and mine is doing that too but only when i put the front wheels in a bind such *** mud but i tried to do it to show a mechanic by climbing a small concrete ledge and it jumped right up the little wall without making a sound did you ever figure yours out?

nope i sure didnt wuld it b because as soon as i put it in 4 wheel and went back instead of forwards wuld that have anything to do with it

i honestly do not know but imo it shouldnt be bc of that im going to take mine to the shop soon hopefully ill let u know wt they tell me

no thats not why.. do you have the straight axle or the independent front with the cv shafts if so your cv shafts are most likely bad the shaft is what goes from your front diff. to your hubs makes them turn if not htose then it is your front drive shaft not the big one that goes to the rear wheels the little one..

and the guy with the 04 check your boots on your cvs and might be a bad one that chipped a tooth on the splined shaft that slides into your shaft id get it looked at if i were you shouldnt be making noise unless your tires rub a little ...like i said might be these things if i could crawl under and look id be able to tell you more been through a few cv shafts...

its not a straight axle i think its called the dual beam front end but i aint positive tho lol

uncle had the same problem with his SUV, took it to the shop and something was messed up forget what it was.

well it is either a wheel bearing or cv shaft or your front drive shaft..

you have a 1990, u have a twin i-beam suspension, the axle doesnt have cv joints, it has u-joints, just like a driveshaft. either your u joint are bad, or it could possibly have a different gear in the front. hightly dout the second on, but im willing to bet yor u-joint in the axles are bad, my truck did the same thing
