Alternator placement on 09-14
Wondering if anyone else has had the same issue with their alternator. My buddy and I went mudding (nothing to serious) and he ended up having steering issues. He noticed he was losing battery power so we called it quits. Obviously the power steering was going out due to the loss in current. He had to take it to the shop for a new alternator. Turned out it had sand in it and ruined the bearings. Couple of months later, I had the same issue so I just hosed it out with contact cleaner and it came back to life. Luckily I took care of the issue before it got bad. Why the hell would anyone design an engine for a 4x4 with the alternator setting so low? It's practically setting just above the oil pan. Is there an aftermarket setup to relocate the alternator?

I had the same WTF moment when I found out where it was mounted, mine is 2wd but from time to time we do get some street flooding.
I applied my own fix and installed a 4" lift kit.

Had the same problem and luckily it died 100 feet in front of my house after a 50 mile drive. I installed a RCI skid plate to block mud from splashing in the engine bay and since I haven't had any problems driving through deep mud with just a 2.5 inch level.

Do you have any problems with your tires throwing mud and water at your alternator? That skid plate may be a good fix to it but the front wheel wells have a lot of open space in them to the engine compartment.

No I've just been hosing it off with water after every time I take it in the mud and I haven't had any more problems yet.

The 5L is the Mustang engine. Look how all the accessories are mounted low. They even need 2 serpentine belts. Then look at the 6.2L. Alt is on top. Too bad they couldn't redesign the accessory attach for the F150. Ford sells a whole lot more 150's than Mustangs.

Im working on getting a skid plate now. Id really like to relocate the alternator, but I know that will get expensive. Thanks for the info everyone.
