didnt bother checking if it was in the way or not, but regardless mounting it where its supposed to go would be tough. Very tight area and itd be too close for comfort to the radiator and all. I'd rather follow instructions; better safe than sorry LOL. Yours is off to the side so you SHOULD be alright. Mine mounts on top of the spool and all. Plus i like to be able to see the wire going in to ensure its not tangled or anything; if you dont pay attention you could kink the line and then its worth its weight in scrap :/
As for line snapping, dont be a tart; use a ****** block if the loads heavy, even if you dont think it 100% necessary. Also, you gotta use a weight. Rag, carpet, whatever the hell ya want. Should help.
I dont plan on pulling semi trailers with it so im not too worried about line snapping. anything bigger than a small sedan and im either using a tow strap or telling em to call a tow truck :P. If its myself ill just use a ****** block and rig it to myself. Doubles pulling capacity (or nearly doubles anyways). For other cars, if i think it too challenging i can just leave !
