Warn or Smittybilt Winch?
I am looking to buy a winch for a tow hitch mount so that I can remove it at my discretion. I'm looking to spend $400-$600 on the winch. So the M8000 or Gen2 X2O 10 perhaps. Smittybilt is definitely the cheaper setup but if I get stuck I don't want to stay stuck and think at least I saved a few hundred dollars! Thoughts? Thanks!!

M8000 is an awesome winch (I had one on my Jeep), but a little light for a nearly 6000lb truck without a ****** block. I bought an ARB recovery kit with snatchblock, recovery strap, 70' extension strap, tree saver, damper, and bag.
Warn-vs-Smittybuilt: I travel alone so I went for the Warn for reliability. That said, if you keep it out of the weather, either should be OK.
Also, with nothing to tie onto, a winch is useless, so I also carry a Pull-Pall. (yeah, you could bury your spare, but that's no fun)
Also-also, for hitch receiver mounting, expect to pay a couple hundred bucks to get big enough cables to pull full strength (435A for 8k lb pull on the Warn) all the way at the back of the truck. For less money(maybe) you could set up a second battery in the bed with a dual charge system.

I'm not even sure I would put Smittybuilt up against anything on the market. What I mean is, everything Smittybuilt "sells" is made in China, and tends to be of a lesser quality level. Always has been. We used to call it Sh_ttyBuilt.
Buy the Warn.

You get what you pay for. Yes smittybilt made in China. , says it on item.
Synthetic rope and wired or wireless remote control.
Only 3 months of use, 2x to get me out and 50 or 60 times to haul out others.
Warn would have been near double the price here.
Warn is a market leader with in house RnD, where if the Internet is to be believed smittybilt copy...
