my sugestion would be to ditch the stock "ifs" and do a sas (solid axle swap) it would be MUCH better for that type of off roading...

i also looked into this kit for the engine at jegs http://www.jegs.com/i/Offenhauser/750/6019-DPK/10002/-1
if i get rid of the stock smog will it harm mpg's or torque? also what else has to be done when changing intake and exhaust?

unless your rear has been swapped, you do not have a D44 rear in it, and if you do, and they have been swapped, TAKE IT OUT. go back to the 8.8 or 9" that was back there, much better, and a lot more parts desgined to work with your truck. rear axle depends on what year it is, if its newer than a 81 or 82, you had the 8.8, i think, not 100% sure on that.
and yes, you may have a D44 front, but it is not what i was origonally talking about, i can hook you up with all the info you will need to do a SAS on one of these trucks, if your interested. post up a picture and i will be able to lend a much bigger helping hand here, or at least give me the exact year, a lot of things changed between 1980 and 1990.

again, i need to know what year it is, because in 1987 they went to EFI on all engines except the 351w and the 460. so if you are in fact EFI then that kit is useless to you. BUT i'm going to take a guess and say you have one of the older carb'd trucks, that will help on a lot of different asspects, although i have read (NOTE: i said read, never had any experience here) that the stock 1 bbl is the best for driveability, after you do some upgrades to it.
the header in the kit has a 2 collectors and if you are the carb'd se up, you only have 1, meaning you will have to run dual exhuast, or run the 2 together somewhere in the system.

let me see a picture, or give me some more info and i can help further.
