Okay, I'll skip the depressurizing if it's not necessary. Last question, was my motorcraft fuel filter supposed to have dust caps? If so, it didn't.....

Simple procedure, remove the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine for a short period of time (don't know how long technically). Relieves the pressure from the low pressure pump. For extra measure of precaution, find relief valve on fuel rail (looks like a metal valve stem), cover with small rag (which will be rinsed with water and discarded) and release pressure with small screwdriver or like tool.

every 30,000 miles, but if the fuel filter gets plugged then u could end up wrecking your fuel pump

Not sure what the previous post is all about......but I just changed fuel filter. Had a bit of trouble getting the tool into the side with the metal clip....but with a screw driver and a little leverage I got it.

Nobody answered my question about dust caps. I found a different "how-to" thread on another site, and in his instructions he references a dust cap. The cap would keep debris from entering the fuel filter between manufacture and install. Will someone please comment on whether or not their fuel filter came with dust caps.

Can you remove the fuel pump fuse? I didnt think there was a fuse just for the fuel pump at least it wasnt listed in the manual or owners book..

I have always wondered if you could just change the filter in the morning after the truck has been sitting and not worry about fuel preasure, but each time I have changed it I went into the passengers kick panel, put the end of my torque wrench on the emergency shut off and banged on it lightly. That kicks the emergency switch off and the truck will turn over but wont start, Then you know all preasure has been released..

ALl you need to do is press the switch back in to turn it back on.

I just bought a motorcraft fuel filter tonight, and it didn't have dust caps either. So, I wouldn't worry about it... lol

you can depressurize the fuel system by pulling the fuse for the fuel pump, THEN start the truck it will run for about 15 sec. then it will just shut off like when you run out of gas only no worry about damage to your pump. then when your all done just put the fuse back in and cycle the key to prime the system.

Where is the fuel pump fuse on a 2005 screw 4x4 5.4?
