Default 295/60R20 noise & MPG - Second thoughts

I had the Toyo A/T II 295/60R20 installed on Thursday and drove 70 miles to my parents' house on Friday. Kinda disappointed with the noise and MPGs, especially the MPG. I knew it would be worse than my stock tires, but didn't plan on dropping from my normal 18.5-19 MPG down to 16.5 MPG on that trip.

Les Schwab offers a 30 day money-back guarantee. The other tire I was considering was the 275/65R20. If I trade them back in, am I going to see a noticeable improvement in gas mileage with the narrower tires?

If you have not corrected the speedo, the readings are not accurate and it will show a larger drop in mpg that actual. Your speedo and odo will also be off.

Correct that, and some of the mileage will come back.

I'm taking that into account. My MPG showed 15.6, so accounting for the 5.8% difference in tire size it was 16.5 MPG.

That sounds about right to be honest. I put 305/50/20 on my truck, and am averaging 16.5 also about 1/2 city 1/2 highway. It's just the price we pay for bigger, heavier tires with wider tread patterns which equates to greater rolling resistance.

I just got 17.6 round trip 25 miles to Les Schwab and back to have them retorque the lug nuts. Considering that includes the big hill going up to my parents' house, I'm a little less concerned now. I'll give them a week and see how they do.

The 275/65 is not the Extreme like the 295/60's are, so not only is it a narrower tire, but weighs 10-15 pounds less per tire.

never mind it's not as big a weight difference as I thought. I was looking between 305/55 and 275/65 and figured the 295/60 would be a similar weight to the 305/55.

305/55 - 74 pounds
295/60 - 62 pounds
275/65 - 57 pounds

I certainly would never base fuel economy on one trip! Sounds like you are starting to figure that out. So many things effect millage you could never compare 10,000 miles of data vs. one 100 mile trip. Temp, traffic, weight loaded in the vehicle, and something as simple as your mood can effect millage by a very noticeable amount.
