Ok, so let me get this straight.....sorry for all the questions.

The factory speaker is a 6x8.....correct?

The adapter I will need is for 6x8 to 6 1/2 round. I know this part should be straight forward but on the sonicelectronix wedsite the 6501's are listed as "6 3/4 (oversized 6 1/2)". Will the 6 1/2 adapter fit these 6501's.

Default Speakers

If you order your speakers from crutch field they will add plates or adapters
For free with your speakers. Looking at ordering some Boston Acoutics for mine
And they offered for free to mount speakers which was a $30 plus savings and free shipping. They have a good guide what will fit your truck.

Factory is 6x8. A round speaker is technically better sq wise, but I think a 6x8 can produce more bass.

I think they would work. Worst case bust out the dremel!

Would go with stock size except they all come with tweeter built in. This would not be a problem except that the signal is crossed over already thus a 2 way speaker will not see full range. For this reason I am looking at component.

1/2 or 5/8 MDF and a jigsaw. You want to bring the speaker out as far as possible.

Not true. Most coaxials (oval or round) on the market today are full range. The "built in" crossovers are simply high pass filters for the tweets.

Factory is 6x8. A round speaker is technically better sq wise, but I think a 6x8 can produce more bass.
Round being better SQ vs. oval is a myth when comparing coaxial speakers of similar quality. It is true that an oval speaker will produce more mid-bass due to its larger cone surface.

Good luck!
