Default Thinking of Buying an Aftermarket Nav System But...

I was looking at getting one of these aftermarket fully loaded Nav systems/Bluetooth/DVD/Stereo etc combos but I noticed the ones I looked at, the Kenwood DNX6140 and the Pioneer AVIV-D3 do not have removable or detachable faceplates. How do you keep them from being stolen?

I have insurance that would cover it if it was to get stolen but after awhile my insurance will get tired of paying for a new stereo and either charge me more or drop me all together according to my agent. So before I drop a $1,000 on a nice system I wanted to do the best I can to keep it from getting taken.

Thoughts?

tint your windows and get a aftermarket alarm, about the only thing you can do to protect it, if they want your headunit they will get it...hell its 4 bolts holding it in and the bezel can be pryed off with a screwdriver easily

I got my windows tinted. I was considering getting alarm systems also, but you are right, if they want it, they will take it no matter what I do to prevent it. However, a head unit with a detachable faceplate sure would help deter someone from break in and taking it.

I cant remember the specifics of the two models you listed but many of these nav units have passwords that you set so that if they are stolen they are worthless without your password.

i have the AVIC f900bt and its been nothing but perfect for me, totally customizable and endless options with great nav features. you can also get security screws to help slow down the process of it being stolen, at least an odd type head on the screw to mount the stereo. Put four different types of screws, anything to help either slow the theif down or at least **** him off. ultimately there isnt much you can do, like he said...they will get it if they want it. good luck with your choice but i say get the f900bt.

Ah see that is good to know. I will need to find out if the ones I am looking at have these features. Using different screws it a nice idea too. Mine will most likely be installed from an audio performance shop, so I will suggest that. Thanks for the advice.

My dad got his truck broken into for his aftermarket DVD/Nav pop out stereo. Two weeks later him and I both installed Clifford alarms. He accidentally left his truck disarmed one night and had his briefcase stolen. My truck was left untouched (parked side by side in the driveway).

I have last years model kenwood ( dnx5120) and it is great. Quickest and best nav unit I have used (three hand held units at the house). DVD's look good and the radio works great. I installed it all myself with absolutely zero car stereo knowledge and was done in an hour.....

Checkout the JVC KW-NX7000 it has some of the better options out there including a detachable face and remote. There is a JVC KW-NX7000BT that comes with the blue tooth adapter or you can just buy it seperate for about $90. We just put one in my girls truck and she loves it. I found the BT model on ebay check it out.
