that's exactly what we did, bought 2 "cheap" tablets, mounts, blu-tooth headphones and Seagate hard drive that emits wi-fi, all about $600

I use the Seagate ap on the tablets to access the hard drive I talked about earlier

Amazon.com: Seagate Wireless Plus 1TB Portable Hard Drive with Built-in WiFi (STCK1000100): Computers & Accessories Amazon.com: Seagate Wireless Plus 1TB Portable Hard Drive with Built-in WiFi (STCK1000100): Computers & Accessories

and yeah tablets and cards will only hold so many movies

here's a USB stick that emits a wifi also

it's give/take about 1gb per movie

Amazon.com: SanDisk Connect Wireless Stick 128GB, Wireless Flash Drive for Smartphones, Tablets and Computers (SDWS4-128G-G46): Computers & Accessories Amazon.com: SanDisk Connect Wireless Stick 128GB, Wireless Flash Drive for Smartphones, Tablets and Computers (SDWS4-128G-G46): Computers & Accessories

the Seagate piece I linked is $130 and 1 TERRAbyte! lol

The Hootoo, the 1st link TooManyVehicles posted, has its own app that lets you browse files (photos, docs, video, ...) using its own app. For both Apple and Android devices. I just bought this and a 32g usb stick. I would use something like this that uses USB vs a SD cards....lot cheaper and more options. IIRC you could even connect up to a 3tb drive to it.

Other cool thing it does is share internet by connecting to your cell phone, assuming your carrier lets you use it as a hotspot. Not gonna happen for the kids (goodby data!) but if wifey wants to check out hotels on her tablet vs. the cell phone she'll be able to do that.

Other way I could see using it is as a wifi router for multiple devices in a hotel room.

If you search "Hootoo manual" its pretty clear. I looked into a wireless drive, just don't need all the extra space for quite a bit more. For $30 I have my "mobile media server" coupled with a 32gig usb stick. Again I could add a larger drive, just don't need it.

You are correct sir. For those who are in to this sort of thing, you can also hack the device and install OpenWRT. Link: https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/hootoo/tripmate-nano

On another front, If I ever get any time, I was thinking of putting a hacked up pogo plug: http://www.adorama.com/COCPOGOV4A1.html in the vehicle as an in-truck computer. This can be hacked to install Linux (Arch or Debian). I have one at home working as a Time Machine backup server. The eventual plan would be to have it hooked up to a wi-fi device (e.g. usb attached) and to have it be the "brains" of an in-truck multi-media hub. The idea would be that it would automatically "talk" to my home server while sitting in the garage/driveway via wi-fi to synchronize music updates (could also do movies) and to also be able to this via VPN connection over public (free) wi-fi. Unfortunately, I have no time to work on this at the moment.

Very cool. I put DD-WRT on our router recently after I found out it had been EOL'd. Best thing I've ever done for our home network!

Checked out the dd-wrt page. Don't understand what it does besides letting you "hack" your router. What do you use it for?

You then have a lean Linux distribution running on the router, to which you can add Linux packages or your own custom code. Here's a decent write-up on it: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/what-is...for-my-router/

So, for instance. I could hypothetically install a bit-torrent client on it and have it "search" for music over public WI-FI networks. Or I could install a VPN client on it an have it communicate over a secure virtual private network from the truck to my server at home to get stuff from home and have it available in the truck.

Yes, I could just put things on a USB stick but that is so 2010.

Having a VPN and a home server is the best thing ever. Not only is all my media available to me everywhere but I also am able to stream my Xbox One games to my laptop no matter where in the world I am
