I put a great system in my truck.
Maybe not top of the line, but sounds incredible.
I put in a Pioneer head unit that control my ipod (which I keep in the glove box). The pioneer HU is 60x4. It also has built in cross-overs.

The HU runs 4 6x8 Infiti reference speakers in the doors.

I have a Kicker 300W amp under the driver seat. It drives a 10inch MTX sub in a made for the f150 standard sub box.

The whole thing was about $700 in product and parts. I installed it all (I used to install stereoes and alarms / remote starters).

pioneer avic n2 and I love it. sounds good with the stock sound system and sub. if you add the cost of a separate navi and dvd head unit its really not a bad deal. you can pick them up new online around $1,400.

Default Kenwood - All The Way

I bought my '98 F150 Std cab about four years ago. It had a Sony Xplode in it (fold down face). Since then I built a dual speakerbox that fits behind the seats. I took the standard plastic tray out from behind the seats, set the seats where I am nice and comfy, took dimensions and built the box that now holds two 10" Kenwoods as well as an 800W Kenwood amp. The box has a cutout in the middle just big enough for the console to fold up and down, which is where the amp is mounted. Wired and installed myself. I have about $500 in everything. All audio came from Circuit City.

I would like to know if anyone has replaced the factory speakers with non-OEM ones and if so, is there a kit that has to be installed in order to mount them. I've been told that OEM's are 6" and I was thinking about going with 6x9's. Any suggestions/help. Thanks...

My 2002 had 6x8's in it and 6x7's would fit also. 6x9's are a little big. Look up your speaker size at http://www.crutchfield.com/S-sZOecBV1rVD/

Default stereo

I think I'll get the drivetrain where I want it first. I got a diablosport predator tuner coming,K&N FIPK intake, AirRaid throttle body spacer, borla cat back exhaust, brush guard, and rollpan.

After all that, i wont have much cash for a stereo.

That stuff has always been secondary for me. If im stuck in a bog somewhere a stereo cant help me run the winch.

If I do upgrade, I may get satellite radio, but thats about it for me.

Right now I only have 4 6x8 eclipse door speaker powered by a 400/4 Kicker amp. As soon as possible I am going to Kings (a car audio flea market in houston) and getting a stationary screen HU, and a JL audio 10w6v2. Then I should be content.
