Default System Upgrade for a 2006 Lariat

Hey everybody,

I want to upgrade the system I have my 2006 Lariat. I've been doing a little looking around on the forums and have some ideas, now I just wanted to post and see what kind of suggestions I would get. I'm not looking to put in a box or subs, just a little more thump and better quality than the OEM system (which I definitely don't like). Plus, I want to have an auxilary/USB. I'm probably leaning towards a Pioneer system (Maybe the new AppRadio - http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...adio+(SPH-DA01)

But I wanted suggerstions. Thanks

The app radio has some limiting factors on future system expansion (addition of amps) because of the single pair of pre-amp outputs, but nothing you couldn't work around.

If you're planning on not running an amp and just swapping out the head unit and speakers, look for 6x8s with high sensitivity and lower low end frequency response.

Well, after doing some more research on the app radio, I don't like it as much anyways. I liked a lot of the features, but there were some drawbacks. I'm really looking for a few specific things:
AM/FM, CD, MP3/Aux/USB port, In dash screen, maybe nav, maybe rear view camera input if I decide to install one. I think I would like the ability to use Pandora as well, but it's not a deal breaker.

As far as speakers, I think I'm just going to upgrade the 6x8's in the door. I don't need a sub or build a box or anything like that, I just want it to sound nicer than the stock one that's in it because I definitely don't like it.

Hey Gator,

What HU would you suggest if I don't plan on running an amp and just changing the 6x8's? I want an in dash screentouchscreen, AM/FM, CD, MP3/Aux/USB port, maybe nav, maybe rear view camera input if I decide to install one. Most quality aftermarket heads have similiar onboard amp sections, so I wouldn't worry about sound quality differences.

I'm far from an expert on current head units, but both the Pioneer and Kenwood heads seem to get decent reviews.

Ok. What about the 6x8's?

Since you'll be using the head unit's on board amp, you won't see much benefit from dropping a ton of cash. Stick to major brands, Pioneer, Infinity, JL, etc., and stay away from flea market stuff like Boss, Dual, Massive Audio, etc.

Look for a high sensitivity (90 dB bare minimum) to get the most out of the power.

Check out outlet sites like sonicelectronix.com and woofersetc.com to get a good deal on last year's models.
