Sundown Sa-8's broke down on me already!
SO I've had these subs in my truck for about 4 months. The other day I heard what I thought was an annoying loose panel or something (cause these little things move some serious air). After further inspection I found the leads on both subs had detached in several spots causing them to slap the back of the cone. I'm running them on a Sundown saz1200d @ 1 ohm. Now I have stock electrical besides the big 3 so I know they aren't even getting full power from the amp. Sundown tells me they won't warranty it because it's caused by overpowering and over excursion. True but how am I supposed to believe that running them underpowered would cause them to do that much damage. Gains are set way low and they never get ran at full tilt for very long. Seems like crappy craftsmanship if you ask me.

If the amp is clipping it can send substantially more power to the subs, in bursts, than what you think they're getting. I'm not saying that happened here, just saying.
It definitely looks like they were driven past the rated throw - what kind of box are they in? Sealed or ported?

Ported. Yea you're probably right about the clipping cause that's all I can come up with. I'm just gonna send em in and have them re-coned for $50 each.

What's the box tuned to? And were you using a subsonic filter?
Just wanna know so this doesn't happen again. It's possible that they were playing below tuning and unloading... causing the mechanical failure.

I do still have the stock HU for now. Here in a couple weeks I'll be getting a new one, haven't decided on which one yet. Also a couple extra batteries are coming soon too

Sorry to hear that man. That's the worst thing about stereo stuff. Any little thing goes wrong, and it seems they automatically jump to you "overpowering" it. At least the recone is fairly cheap. I've been lucky with my DC XL so far, and abuse the **** out of it.

Got em pulled out and packaged up tighter than a frogs *******. Hopefully the turn around won't be too long for the re-cone. I'm going to make some changes before I put them back in anyways. I think a new HU and a kinetic should do the trick.

Im running 2, sa-8 d4's on 2ohms. at1200.1d 1056w. Big 3 with 0 gauge, Optima yellow top and a kinetik hc600 battery behind the seat. All cable is 0 gauge cca. Voltage drop when the truck is running and the subs are on a load is no more then .50-.65... Ported box tuned to 42hz...
I beat the crap out of my subs. Have no problems at all. But now, ill remove the subs and see what it looks like.
All the tuning of my amps is done by myself. Only i know what sounds good to me, no one else. Your pics indicate a definite over powering of the subs. Now, what the problem is. Not many people no this but its your factory head unit. It is one clipping SOB. I have all my gains as low as i can get them due to the factory HU clipping so bad.
