Default Subwoofers: 1-12", 1-10", or 2-8"?

Ok, I'm caught in a dilemma.

I just had my stereo done and I'm not too hot on the bass.

I have the kicker 10" Comp S and ported box pictured below. Many songs just don't hit that lower bass. It's powered by a CX300.1 and both speaker and are rated at 300rms.

I bought a KX800.1 rated at 800 RMS and I'm going to install that and go from there.

I have a 12" Comp RT coming tomorrow but I'm worried it won't fit under the seat of the super crew as I don't want the box sticking out much from under the seat which the current Comp S does. The box they have fits but has .6 cu.ft. of air space which it says the minimum for a sealed box is .5 cu.ft. My guess, it's going to sound worse than the ported 10" I have despite the 200w RMS lead the 12" has on it. I picked up a box from Fryes which is .9 cu. ft of space with the max the a sealed box should be is 2.0 cu.ft.

Do I:

- just roll with the 12" as its a more powerful built sub, but will be hindered due to the boxes not giving it what it needs

- or get al Comp RT 10", or other powerful 10", and throw that in the kicker ported box. The 10" RT is at 100w RMS greater than the Comp S in a ported box.

- or get 2 small sealed boxes with 10" Comp RT's rated at 400w RMS and have the mono kicker KX800.1 amp run 2 at 400/ea which I'm thinking will be much more powerful than a solo 12"...

Or go 2 - 8's which require less airspace and stay hidden under the seats but are only rated at 300rms/ea.

What would you do?

I think I saw those at Fryes. They were 10's though at 250rms I believe...

Would you have pics of how your box sits under the seat?

.2 ft3? For a 12?!?! That aint right. That would be too small even for an 8. You've read something wrong or they've printed something wrong somewhere. A 12 will need .7 or more generally. And like I said in the other thread, the minimum rating is just that, the smallest you should use for good sound. .6 is a BIGGER box than the .5 so you're good. All the size does is affect the response curve of the sub. It wont hurt anything unless its way too big and the sub is working in free air. You could blow some suspension parts then because there isn't enough air pressure to regulate it's movements.

As for your question, get the 12, a sealed box if you're wanting better quality bass and spend some time tuning it. No system sounds good out of the box. You're gonna need to do a little tweaking. Could be as simple as a phase issue and flipping the phase 180 degrees would probably fix it.

If I were you, I would get 1 10in Sundown SD3, which is a shallow mount sub. Have a custom box made for it and sit back and smile.

Hey guys, thanks for your help. Yea, MacLeod, it was a typo; I meant 2, not .2. Lol.

At any rate, the guy ordered the 12" Comp RT and he got the wrong one. The money I had put towards the sub he kept for the time being.

I called up another shop I've had work done at. He walked me over to a truck with the 2016 Comp RTs in a sealed box. Those things pounded very very nicely. I was convinced I wanted only 1, but he had a box that fit F150 and I said screw it, I'm tired of buying and returning and bought 2. I returned the Kicker Comp S box and the Kicker CX300.1, nothing wrong with them but there's no heavy bite.

The other shop that held on to my $100 deposit on I am having install it. He knows where he put where, so I'll let him disconnect the amps, and reroute the wires to fit in the middle instead of the outside...

I'm about to head out in 10 min to go see how things are going as he should be about done.

I'm hoping that the Kicker KX800.1 will be strong enough to push the two 500w RMS Comp RT's.

I was going to say 2 8's. The right set up seems to hit harder than some of the 10's and 12's. Granted this was a few years ago, so things will have changed hopefully. Hope your system hits like you want it.

You should be happy with it.
If in doubt you can even check phasing with just a 9 volt battery like in your house smoke detectors to.

Checking phase with a battery won't do the trick. I'm talking about out of phase with the mids up front. If the sub'd wave is out of phase with the mid's you'll get cancelation and that will mean less output. If you're not getting the bass response you think you should be, flip the wires on the sub (positive to negative and vice versa) and see how that works.

I just want to thank MacLeod and everyone for their help.

I went with your advice and am extremely happy. I remember hearing the shallow mount speakers 15yrs ago and they sucked horribly so everyone went ported if possible.

I have to admit that this setup is light years from the garbage factory speakers and for about the same price as the kicker OEM premium sound from ford, this destroys that too.

I'm extremely happy with the choices you guys helped me go with.

My setup is:
- Pair of Infinity Kappa components (90w rms)
- Pair of Infinity Kappa Coaxial (90w rms)
- Powered by Kicker KX 400.4 (100rms/ch)
- 2 - 12" Kicker Comp RT Shallow 500rms/ea. in sealed truck box
- Powered by Kicker KX800.1 (800w rms)
- Stock deck bc I like ford features so running a hi/Lo converter and sounds great!

This system is, and from the complements I've gotten from people who have listened, is very much so clear, crisp, nice balance of mids and highs, and the 2 12's are exactly what I was looking for. The kicker ported comp s 10" just didn't have it. It hit pretty hard with its bass but low really low notesade it struggle in silence.

I wanted 1-12" thinking I needed a huge sealed box for sound. But once I got to the shop and heard the owners 2-12" comp RT in the sealed box I was sold! These two subs play every genre of my music from old school hip hop, rock, alternative, and believe it or not classical for when my wife drives my logical mind bonkers with her emotional tornados.

These two subs together in the small truck box sound amazing for being so compact. Also it fits flush with my seat unlike that other kicker factory box which stuck out 2".

Thanks again for all of your help. This has been a crazy past few weeks with returns and exchanges. Just do it right and put some faith in small sealed truck boxes. I was a doubter but I'm on board with sealed boxes and shallow mount subs. The right ones will do the job!
