Down fire boxes will definitely produce louder deeper bass inside the vehicle but they tend not to carry as far outside the vehicle.
I think thats the way it should be. First purpose for having subs is for the person riding in the vehicle to listen to. Second would be if you want to show off. I don't have a problem with loud stereos as long as people are respectful and don't drive through neighborhoods at 11 or 12 PM with there windows down rattling windows. The problem with showing off is that it gives car stereos a bad rap and sound laws with ridiculous fines are the results.
The latest thing around here are these kids riding around with marine 6x9's zip tied to the back side of there grilles so people have to listen to loud profane vocals to complement there subs.

i have an alpine type r and have multiple friends who have them now... I honestly think it is the best sub on the market for your money by far.. I love it. BUT if you dont run enough power to them it will just be a mediocre sub.

I find that Alpine is like the Babe Ruth of subs. They knocked the ball outta the park with the Type R and they struck out with the Type E and Type S. The Type R's work VERY well in small vented enclosures and you can find them online for $125 or at retail shops for $160-180. The Type E and S are cheaper subs but there are much better subs for entry level budgets or applications where a deep sub like the Type R won't fit. Memphis Audio makes the PR series subs and the new JL Audio 10w0 V2 is the best value I have seen in a while. The new W0 v2's has more xmax than the original w6's and the 10's sell for $99.
When it comes to electronics I recommend buying from a local retailer that keeps the product in stock. That way if a problem arises you can exchange it without the downtime and hassle of shipping your amp or sub off.
Local retailers can also assist you in properly setting your amp and head unit which is just as important as the components themselves.
