Default Stereo or speakers first?

I have a 2012 STX with a stock stereo and it sounds like crap especially when using the aux port with my phone. What should I upgrade first to get a better more clear sound the stereo or speakers?
I've read on here that the stock door speakers are junk but is the stock stereo good enough for aftermarket speakers?
Thanks...

I did the stereo first and while there was a big improvement in the sound quality, it still sounds muddy so the speakers are next. I would try the speakers first if I were to do it again.

I like to use the factory stereo with high quality amplifier with matching speakers.
JL Audio's HD series are great amps that are small.

I replaced the front and rear speakers in my STX - nothing fancy that requires an amp and kept the stock head unit. It sounds SO much better. Best $80 upgrade yet (though the speakers were on sale; $25 off each set)

The Alpine 445U made my stock radio and speakers sound a lot better. Of course once I did that I changed to 6.5 round focals, and now I have the hideaway coming

I'd recommend the speaker route first for sure. Let me know if I can quote out something for you.

Yes I'm a dealer for a few brands. I'm running a special on JL Audio and Second Skin this month. I'll PM you.

Has anyone ever taken off the A-pillar by the windshield? If so are there any wires that run in there also is just the 2 bolts under the covers by the handle that hold them on? I'm planning on installing tweeters in or on them. This is on an 08 xlt

I have a 2011 and have removed the passenger side A-Pillar. There is an airbag there, and I believe a few wires, but I was able to fit 2 smaller wires; one for the dashcam and 1 for the LCD rear view mirror. Not sure about the drivers side, and yes, all I did was remove to the two bolts, and gave it a good pull.
