Running the Sony sub on aftermarket amp
I had car audio stuff laying around and some free time...I thought: I wonder how many watts it would take to blow up the Sony sub
I'm kidding, sorta. I wanted to see what I could do without buying a new sub and box.
So I have a LC2i and a Alpine 1.600 hooked up to the stock Sony sub in series (~2.6 ohm load)
It worked. And damn good in fact. I just have to keep the levels in check, but I'm giving the sub a good clean (powerful) signal. I'll probably end up smoking it, but that'll give me some time to save up for a Sundown Audio SD-3 10".
Just thought I would share in case anyone had the same idea.
I cut off the stock plug and twisted the green/white & green/purple together and connected my mono amp to the purple/green (+) and the grey (-) wires.

Under the center console. I tried to tap them near the pillar between the passanger side doors (all of the wires run just behind the passanger seat and around to all of the speakers in the truck), but the carpet was held down too tightly by the seat and such. It was just easier to tap it under the console since it's just 6 bolts.
Couple of pro tips: The console is heavy and has sharp corners. Watch your leather. Also, when you disconnect the console harness from the truck - the computer will NOT turn off and it will run your battery down. Don't leave it overnight or disconnect the battery (it should be disconnected for electrical work anyway). I had my console out, reconnected the battery and moved the truck into the garage and left the project for another day...came out to a VERY dead battery.
You can easily find the wire colors to tap via a little bit of googling.
