To be honest, I'm not sure...a local shop did it for me. I can tell it to pair with my phone, but it can't find it. The screen just reads "searching", then "no phone detected". I think...its been a while. If I recall correctly, you had to push a button on the factory HU to complete the pairing.

Strange. It sounds like you are doing everything correctly. if i were you i would do 2 things. first try to pair a diffferent phone, just to be absolutely sure it isn't a phone related issue. second, i would call pac audio and ask them if they have any suggestions. i have spoken to them a few times and they have great support. sorry i can't offer more solutions but i have not had to figure this part out, as mine worked with no issues.
i just noticed in your signature that you are also running an aftermarket amplifier. interestin. i'd like to know how you are doing that and retaining sync at all. i had to make my own adapter using dpdt relays from radio shack when i added an amplifier. are you running the amplified signal through the msfrd 1?
also,
if you have your phone paired with your aftermaerket hu, it may be the problem.

In all honesty, save urself the $100 bux and just get the PAC harness and lose sync. I got the FRD1 for my pioneer and havnt used sync since. The interfaces on new head units is so much better.
U can also take the METRA AXXESS route, it's an alli n one bundle for harness and steering wheel. I was going this route but couldn't cause I have the Sony sound

Ok, I think I got your fix. If your head unit is powering down its because the install shop didn't hook your stereo's (most likely purple wire) mute loop wire to the (brown) mute loop wire of the MS FRD-1. If this is not done the HU will power down when you try to use SYNC. I know because the install shop I used did the same crap, and I had to do it myself.
Since your using a 1 channel amplifier, this should be an easy fix. It would probably be quicker to do yourself. Take out your HU. On the MSFRD-1 there should be a wide connector with a brown wire that just loops back to the connector. Cut it and splice the part of the wire closest to the outside of the connector to which ever wire is the mute wire on your HU. I have an AV Pioneer HU and it was purple (it will have a label on it that says "mute", can't miss it). After doing this, your HU will simply mute instead of powering off.
Keep in mind SYNC doesn't run through your HU. Well at least the nav, voice prompts, and phone call portion. The bluetooth media goes through your HU via your HU's AV connections, so if you want to stream media, you must select the appropriate AV source on your HU.
If you feel skiddish doing this, just call PAC audio, and they will walk you through it, but it really is very quick and easy. If you have wiring equip it should take about 20 minutes.

After thinking about your problem, what I discussed above is a problem, but may not be your problem with the pairing as Sync should pair with your phone whether your HU has power or not. Sync doesn't need your HU to recognize your phone. I'd recommend trying to pair your phone with something else, and/or trying to pair another phone with your truck.
Let me scratch my head for a bit on this one.
