Joey, I just removed the insulation with a razor, made a slot in the wire, put the "new" wire into the slot and twisted, then soldered and taped.

I used a wire tap initially for my install, then I thought that any method I was going to do, wires were going to be damaged somewhat and I don't like to use wire taps if I don't have to.
I decided to use my wire strippers to open up both wires to solder them.
Hard to commit to but made a very solid connection. Works great now.
