Default quick question concerning speakers and amp

Hi there, I am upgrading the sound of my 2010 xlt f150 and have a question about matching amp rms with speaker rms. Currently i have 4 Pioneer TS-G6844R speakers installed which are rated at 40W rms. My question is, would I be specifiable looking for an amp to match that rms rating, or would it be better to find an amp which is overpowered for the speakers, and use it at low gain? I appreciate any insight that can be given on this topic, thanks.

Edit: I am looking at a Sony amp rated at 4x 70W rms,

They are rated much higher at peak power so the amp you have would be fine

Everthing I've read says the amp rms should be 75% - 125% of speaker rms. Basically the same size.

If you do any research, you will see that an underpowered AMP is way more damaging to a speaker than overpowering a speaker. If an AMP clips (due to not enough power) then it sends a square wave to the speaker. Speakers can not handle a Square wave well and is more likely to damage the speaker. An over driven speaker just can't handle the power and just temporarily "quits".... Neither is ideal, but the former is worse.

More than likely you probably won't be driving your speakers for extended periods of greater than 40 rms.
