Question Playing CD-R's in stock radio

Shortly after buying my wife's Explorer new back in '05, we had to replace the radio. If I'm not mistaken, I think it was replaced 2 more times in '06 as well. The tech that took care of all the audio issues for the dealer told her that playing burnt cd's or cd-r's in a stock radio will mess them up. Is there any truth to this, as I play cd's burnt from music saved on my computer all the time in my F-150. I have never given this any thought until the other day. Does it make any difference if it's the mp3 stereo?
