I have been told that a downfiring sub in a truck is bad because the weight will eventually break the MDF that most boxes are made from. If you are building your own, you can make the speaker baffle from ply. Then no probs.

BTW I am planning and have ordered a JL 10" up firing in a 0.5cuft box that will fit under the small seat in the back of my Scab. It may take a lift.

For me the benefit to downfiring is protection of the subs.

Just remembered it was a BOSS amp. A lot of people say they are poor quality but like I said, it has lasted over 8 years with no isssues. Would I be crazy in purchasing another one to run the Alpine subs? I can a 700W for around 80 bucks.

Crazy, no. just dont expect to get any longevity out of it. you were lucky on your first one LOL. and for a boss amp that "700w" is more like 300. Here's a legit 500w for under $100

Specs says the Type R's run at 150-350W RMS. So would I need 700W amp or could I get away with 500W?

500 will be plenty. you dont have to run the max wattage a sub will take. also, you wont be able to hear the difference between 500 and 700.

Ok. One more question while I have you interested lol.

The subs are dual 4 ohm. Will that amp be able to run two subs?

No. Your final impedance will be 4 ohms with 2 of those subs and that amp will only give you 250 watts at 4ohms, which means that each sub will only see 125 watts each.

Will it work, yes. Will you be able to maximize the output of the subs, no.

I would recommend spending the extra $50.00 on the MTX amp. You will get 1,000 watts at 1ohm which means each of those subs would see 500 watts each. Dial back the gains a bit and you will be in heaven. It is better to have a little extra power on hand than not enough. The extra headroom will mean that the amplifier will not have to work is hard to drive the subs & therefor should run more efficient and cooler.

Just my 2 cents.

Nice catch TK5. I didn't see the amp isn't 1ohm stable. If you use dual2 subs it would workwork
