Default Metra Wiring Harness Issue

I'm in the process of installing a system in my truck using the following wiring harnesses, tapped into a MTX re-Q.

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...a+70-5520.html

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...71-5520-1.html

I got everything connected up, the radio and the LOC turn on, but I have no steering wheel controls. So far with the 5520-1 harness, I'm only using the 24 pin connector. Here are the wires I have not connected to anything:

71-5520-1 (24 pin) male
orange/white illum +
orange/black illum -
blue/red PAEN (US), AUD. SYSON (Mazda)
black/green GROUND (MAURADER), CLOCK (OTHERS)
black/yellow PTA (EXPEDITION)
grey/red VSS (+)
red/white 12V. IN START
yellow/orange NO FUNCTION
yellow/blue NO FUNCTION
green/red STEERING WHEEL CONTROL +
grren/white STEERING WHEEL CONTROL - (EXPEDITION)

71-5520 female
blue power antenna
blue/white amp turn on
orange/white dimmer

I know I need the steering wheel control wires hooked up...but where? Here is the manual for the 5520-1 harness, showing what's on the other plugs.

Connect all of the wires straight across (match the pin locations) except for the speaker leads. That way you make sure you're keeping everything.

I'm not sure I'm understanding you. I have eleven wires left on the male, and only three left on the female. I shouldn't have to tap into the factory wires should I?

Here's the real connector diagram if it helps, you need all but seven of the pins connected.

So do I have to tap into the factory wires? Did I get the wrong female harness? I'll look at this on the truck and see if it makes more sense.

Still didn't make sense I thought the whole idea of a wiring harness was:

1. Plug factory male plug into aftermarket female plug.

2. Splice wires from aftermarket female plug to aftermarket male plug.

3. Plug aftermarket male plug into head unit.

...no cutting of the factory wires involved. This should be pretty easy, and I'm getting frustrated with myself. Should I just say screw the harness, and tap the LOC into the factory wiring? That would probably cause more frustration. The part of this install I was most worried about was mounting my component speakers. That went surprisingly uneventful.

I did exactly what you're doing. Which pins are missing from the female?

Here's what on the female:
  • Yellow – 12V Constant
  • Red – 12V Accessory
  • Black - Ground
  • Orange – Dash Light Dimmer/Illumination
  • Green – Left Rear Speaker (+)
  • Green with Black Stripe Left Rear Speaker (-)
  • White – Left Front Speaker (+)
  • White with Black Stripe – Left Front Speaker (-)
  • Purple – Right Rear Speaker (+)
  • Purple with Black Stripe – Right Rear Speaker (-)
  • Gray – Right Front Speaker (+)
  • Gray with Black Stripe – Right Front Speaker (-)
...and here's the males http://metradealer.com/files/products/INST71-5520-1.pdf

For one the female does not have any steering wheel wires. Thanks for your patience, and your help.

I had the same issue with the harness i purchased. My steering wheel volume was not working. My connector was missing location 19 so i removed the red cover from the front of the purchased plug. Located the 2 wires for the steering wheel controls on the original harness. Checked the purchased plug pin holes for wires in location 18 and 19.My connector came with brown wires that was not used. I moved one of the not used wires to the proper location. If no wire is in location 18 and 19 take a paper clip and slide it in from the front of the purchased plug to one of the unused wires. Once you push the retaining tab back the pin will pull out from the rear of the plug. Now from the back push the pin in the correct location.Repeat this operation for both male and female purchased connectors. All is well now.
