Installing 6x9 speakers in doors
#31
I'm just unhappy that I don't have the extra space needed to install my other Polk Audio MM691's in the rear doors. Sooooo, it's official.... As much as I hate to, I am going to have to sell my set of Polk Audio MM691 3-way 6x9's. They sound incredible.. I've never heard a "6x9" sound THIS good (but don't take my word for it.. there are many reviewers on Crutchfield who say the exact same thing as me.. 5 out of 5 stars). The good news is that I still get to keep the other set of MM691's mounted in my front doors.
Sigh..

Suggested rear door speakers
Very impressed with your thread. I've wanted to do the same but haven't been as motivated to cut you were. It doesn't look as bad as I was thinking so now I've got more inclination to follow through.
The Polk's you are using look great so now I want to audition a pair, but I've always sworn by these JBL speakers. I have gone through so many speakers in my previous cars that I was relieved to find a great quality brand that has always taken everything I threw at them. Super low end, clean highs and rattle free after years of thumping. I never felt I needed a sub after putting these in.
These JBL speakers should compliment your Polk's well and the mounting depth is about a half inch less. I think it would be worth your while to take a look.

I haven't used these but website indicates they are an upgrade. And the mounting depth is about an inch less than the Polk speakers.

Again, thanks for posting your process with all the pictures!

That's a lot of work.
6x9 speaker are a sore point for me. This F150 has huge doors, huge door panels, and lots of space available compared to most vehicles.
WHY NO FACTORY 6x9's??!?!?!?
I had a 2008 Mustang a while back. The rear deck had all kinds of room for 6x9s. But nope, it came with 5x7's just like all the other crap Ford puts out.
I think Ford picked ONE speaker that fits every car...the 5x7 and rolled with it. That sucks. 6x9s sound so much better than 5x7's.
GRRRRR... this really gripes me.
Years ago, I had a 4 door Accord with factory space for 6x9s in the rear deck. I had a really efficient set of Boston Acoustics back there. I swear it sounded like I had a modest subwoofer. It thumped pretty good. Sounded great too.

...is a sweet ride
Would be nice for this thread to resurrect and see the resulting choices and work.
Thanks for the detailed write up and the great pics. I would do this mod 100% exactly the same if I can get the rear speaker issue resolved and the amp questions answered. I want to keep the factory head unit (I don't have the Sony system).

THREAD BACK FROM THE DEAD... I purchased some 6 1/2" polk audio MM series (marine) mids (with tweeter). From the last time I posted, a lot has happened in my life.. I ended up purchasing a 2013 Nissan 370z ($50,000 car). I had to put my huge stereo on hold but ended up trading the Nissan in back in June of this year. I purchased a 2014 Chevrolet Stingray Z51 Corvette. That totally sucked all of my money out of my account. Soooo, I am going to just re-do my amp mount and rear door speakers. At this point, my 2006 F150 is just a "to and from" vehicle. My $$$ is going towards the Vette and as of now, I plan on throwing $10K on a supercharger / headers / meth injection. I'm still serious about the sound but it's a BIG second place to my newest car.. I will try to snap a few pics for those who still might consider a modest upgrade to their systems..

They might sell adapters for that, but I’d just buy some quality stuff that fits with no modifications if it were me. A lot easier and probably not that much difference in output.
