Not sure why someone at Kenwood told you this. I'm pretty sure it's not correct. Call them and ask to speak to Matt Y. He can help you. You do not need to buy any special cable you can use the lightning to USB cable that came with your phone or a second one if you purchased it.

1. Make sure you have the latest firmware loaded for the radio.
2. Make sure you set the AV2 input for AVIN, NOT IPOD when you set up radio. If you did, you should be able to use your iPhone5 as a media device in the iPod source on the radio and you will have audio and controls. (THIS IS MOST LIKELY YOUR ISSUE. THIS SETTING IS HARD TO FIND, YOU HAVE TO BE IN STANDBY TO CHANGE IT).
3. If 1 and 2 are correct, launch Pandora on your phone. Then launch Pandora on the Kenwood and make sure you choose wired cable as the connection method.

Pandora should work with audio and control.

Just installed this HU. Bought the adapter cord to use an iPhone with it. Also needed to get and adapter from the old apple plug to the new lightning plug. Music works, as well as pandora. Hope this helps anyone who is looking for help.
Only complaint is that when I'm playing music via Bluetooth there's a static sound coming from the speakers. No idea how to fix it.

Last post on this from the guys at ADS, I promise. You don't need either of those cords. We have several radios on our bench full time and we just use the lightning cable that came with phone for ipod and Pandora. You just have to set the AVIN setting correctly as outlined above.
