Default need help

I have a 2006 FX4 Supercab and it currently has the standard radio and no sub.

I am getting ready to buy a factory 6cd navigation head unit. When I spoke with the place I'm getting it I provided my vin so they can program the unit and was told my truck did not come with a subwoofer. They indicated the unit is programmed with or without a sub. I really want to get a factory subwoofer for under the seat. Now for my questions.

1 - Since I will have a subwoofer installed either factory or aftermarket should I have the radio programmed that way. I'm sure it sounds like a dumb question but I'm not sure how long it will be before I can afford to get a sub.. Will the radio work correctly if programmed for sub and I don't immediately have one?

2 - I've also seen a subwoofer/amp combo which could go under the drivers seat. Would that work well?

3 - When cash is good I also want to replace the door speakers and add an amp. Would the amp/sub combo be enough amp or would I need an additional amp?

4 - I'm just wanting a clear good sounding system. Would I have that if I only have the nav unit and amp up the speakers with no sub?

Basically ... what do I need??

I really have know idea of how or what is need with system. I will have to have everything installed.

Thank you in advance for your help.

1- I would most definitely say it would work right, although I would assume that the door speakers will lack much lower bass.

2- Not alot of space below driver seat, especially with power seats (addressed below)

3 & 4 - (addressed below)

What kind of budget are you looking at dealing with here?

Using the older factory headunits and going with an aftermarket set of amps can get pretty pricey. For the most part, a signal proccessor like a JL CleanSweep or a AudioControl LC7i is really needed to get everything balanced out. You can pick up pretty decent double din with navigation for not a lot of money these days, and to top it off Black Friday/Cyber monday is right around the corner.

As far as amp/speakers/subwoofers are concerned, you can get quite a bit for not alot, if you choose your equipment carefully. A single 8 inch woofer on 300w in a small sealed wedge box would be plenty enough to keep up with a mild 200w front stage. Something like a Sundown Audio SD-3 8 inch or E-8v3 8 inch woofer paired with a budget component set such as the Kicker 40CSS684's would make for a very respectable daily driver. Something more in the realm of morning talk shows, to country music(real country like Merle Haggard) and rock like Skynrd, AC/DC. Rap and Hip Hop too, but I assume you aren't into that.

The big key to a nice sounding install is more so the prep work you do beforehand. Getting the front door skins properly sound deadened will play a major role in the outcome of how the front midranges will sound. It is definitely a good idea to put some money into sound deadening, as it will also cut down on road noise and give you a more pleasurable drive.

So here's my list of equipment I'm going to throw you, but I am going to leave out the headunit:

Kicker 40CSS684 6x8 Component set, for the front doors $100
Kicker 40CX684 6x8 Coaxil set, $50 for the back doors*
Kicker 40CompRT81 8 inch shallow mount subwoofer 300w rms $100
Kicker CX600.5 5 channel amplifier, $350

I picked kicker because you are going through a local shop to get everything installed. Basically any brick and mortar shop is going to carry kicker. Personally, if I was wanting to stick to a budget, I would run 2 pairs of the Coaxial's, which would set me at $100 total for door speakers in all 4 doors. The Kicker 5 channel, while expensive, plays the role of two amps in one. It is powering all 4 door speakers, and also your subwoofer, which would be a small 8 inch woofer that could go in a very small enclosure under the backseat, since I assume you have a power seat being an FX4.

Now I realize that $550 is not a small sum of money, but it is roughly the same amount that the newer F150 guys are paying for a VERY similar setup being the Soundgate package, which in like $1200 most places but I guess is like $400 for members here.
In addition to the speakers, I would add about $150-200 for sound deadner and install accessories, since a 4 gauge wiring kit is required by the amp, and also a total of 6 rca channels will be needed.

There is a pretty good installer in Virginia, his name is David Berger, owns DB Designs, but I'm not sure where he is at. There is also another guy, a younger guy, Galen Winesette that lives in Martinsville. Not exactly sure if he will do smaller installs, but he is a VERY VERY talented young man with a lot of experience.
