Default Help me make my Subwoofer Decision- Shallow Mounts

Guys/ Gals,
I've settled on running a "Rodney's" single 10 or 12 box off eBay.
I am running an Alpine PDX-v9 that puts out 500w RMS at 4 ohms.

Which shallow mount would you buy??

Alpine SWT10S4- 10" and 350w RMS

JL Audio 12TW3-D4 12" at 400w RMS- about $200 more than others

Pioneer SW3002S4- 12" at 400RMS, cheap but gets great reviews

Of the 3, the only one worth using is the JL. Even better would be the StereoIntegrity BM. Best yet would be to use a real sub. Look into the Fox Acoustics single 10 box and an Alpine Type-R 10. Will easily kill any shallow mount

I used the 10" version of that subwoofer in my truck. See sig. It is plenty and the box fits under the smaller side (passenger) of the back seat.

I have had the JL 10" tw3 shallow and now have the JL 13.5" tw5 shallow. Both are amazing subs and sound fantastic. They need a good amp and clean signal to sound their best. Nothing wrong with a good shallow mount sub in a sealed enclosure.

What made me shy away from the Fox Box is the fact it is a ported box. I like the "tight" sound of a sealed enclosure.
Is there a big difference between the two? Sealed and ported?

I've always been a sealed box guy myself. Unfortunately we're space limited so compromise is a must. Shallow mounts are not a compromise i am willing to make. I would sooner use a ported box than a shallow mount. I feel like most would be happier with a real sub ported over a shallow sealed

Another option is Rockford Fosgate:

I've had one of these in two other cars, and about to put it in my F150 after I put together what to do for an enclosure

not accurate. You must not have had a good shallow mount sub in the past. A ported box is a huge downgrade in sound quality. You won't be disappointed with the JL shallow 12" in the JL box. The kick drum is just great. You also won't be disappointed with the ported fox box paired with a JL w3 but that's up to you. Still a good recommendation for sure but sealed down firing is the way to go in a big open cab for good crisp bass. My 13.5 tw5 fits under the single rear seat.

You are correct. I havent because a shallow sub is a compromise I'm not willing to make. There are 3 shallow subs on the market worth buying. The SI BM, the JL tw5, and the illusion c12. None of those cost less than $300 (the illusion is closer to $600). None of them can compete with a similarly priced full size subwoofer. A shallow sub is NEVER the best option unless you absolutely can't fit a real sub. And to make a blanket statement that a ported box is "a huge downgrade in sound quality" is plain ignorant

The 10" JL audio shallow mount is about $300. It is perfectly adequate IMO. I just spent 5hrs in my truck. It sounded great. No you will not hear BOOM BOOM coming down the street. It is for inside listening and plenty loud with a 400W amp.
