Free hack to get a better fit for 5X7 speakers.

Free hack to get a better fit for 5X7 speakers.
I upgraded my front speakers tonight with 5X7/6X8 Infinitys. I had a rather large gap where they did not completely cover the opening from the 6X8 factory speakers. Here is on the fly fix.
1. I removed the grill from the factory speaker. This will ruin the factory speaker so there is no going back.
2. I cut out the grill mesh leaving only the outer ring with outward facing foam still attached.
3. Place the newly created grill ring between the door panel and the new speaker. The grill ring must be placed "face down" to allow the new speakers to nest into them.
4. Screw down the speaker sandwiching the ring between the door and the speaker. Done.
Mine covered the opening much better than the speaker alone even though 5X7/6X8 speakers are supposed to be a direct replacement.
I was working on the fly so I didn't take any pictures. I am going to do the rears in the near future. I will take pictures when I do. Anybody have a better solution for this? I was re-using a set of speaker that I had in another Ford product (they never fit correctly in it either). Maybe newer speakers are finally coming with trim rings that actually fit? Mine had what they called a 6X8 adapter but it did not fill the opening any better than just the speaker.

Those speakers must not have been standard sized, I put 4 Polk audio in my doors and they fit perfectly.

It is a 2013. The speakers are old, but standard size. Here is what I have.

Every 5x7/6x8 speaker that I have ever tried has sealed poorly in a Ford factory 6X8 opening. I wish Ford would stop using such a crappy speaker size and go with a 6.5"

My infinities came with a stick on foam gasket to better seal against the door panel! No issues heres!
