Default 2015 XLT SCREW Sound System Upgrade?

Hey Guys,

This is my first post, as I just purchased a '15 XLT SCREW last week and the sound system sucks lol. I have the 302a package with the large screen and no navigation. I have the rear camera, but that's about it.

I've decided to get the Mytouch Lockpick Air, so I can mirror my phone to the screen. But beyond that I need help.

So to help me, let me tell you a little background about myself and my music preferences.

#1. I love BASS, it's what I crave and love about music. If a song doesn't have a lot of bass, then I probably won't like it. I listen to mainly hip-hop, mostly for those reasons. When I was younger I'd buy those bass competition cd's and just play those all the time.

#2. I love LOUD, yes, I am probably that guy at the concert with his head next to the speakers, head-banging and loving every minute. Doesn't have to be the clearest, audiophile experience... Just crisp and loud.

#3. I've always had some sort of upgraded sound system with subs in our cars, since I was 10 years old and my dad went all out on my moms 93 Thunderbird lol.

Cars/and their setup
02 Acura Rsx/ 2 12" JL W3v2s, 6.5 components in the front.
05 BMW 530i/ Stock but actually really nice. Never got around to upgrade it.
Brother's Buick Riviera/ 4 15"s, 6 6x9's and it sounded great.
15 VW GTI/ Upgraded Fender Audio, very clear and somewhat loud but no bass.

So, right now I am not looking for anything crazy. Actually I want to just upgrade the door speakers right now and add a amp along with the Mytouch Lockpick Air and do so on somewhat a low budget.

I believe the speakers in the 15 F150 are 6x9 in the front and 6.5 in the back which is weird. I also see some tweeters in the front door sill and I'm not sure but it looks like a speaker on the top of the dashboard.

I want to add subs to the truck, but that may be added later depending on the price. I don't want anything that goes under the rear seats, as I use that area for storage/dogs/etc... So I'd only be interested in something that goes behind the seats.

I want to keep the stock H/u so do I need to run a JL Cleansweep? or something similar.

Can anyone help me out on picking out a good setup?

Also, regarding the Mytouch Lockpick Air. I know you can add a front camera. But I was wondering if I buy a Lariat front grill, with the stock camera already in it, will that be plug and play and work as if it came with the truck?

Hey welcome to the forum!

I hear your pain on the truck audio. I`ve been looking at upgrading my Lariat with the Sony system which I can`t tell if you have nor not.

Kicker now offers their factory upgrade (Vehicle Specific Solutions, VSS) for $1500 you can get extra amplification to all speakers and and nicer bigger more powerful sub. This is what I think is the best for these new trucks and leaves everything in tact and definitely not crazy. You can change out all the speakers all you want but I think adding more power is what will make the biggest difference in how it all sounds. But after amping it you could add four new efficient speakers but that would obviously up your budget.

Before this was offered I looked at using a Mosconi Gladen D2 100.4 or 80.6 with Focals poly-line all around and a shallow mount JL custom box behind driven by another 500.1. These amps are perfect because they include an amazing DSP so you wont need the cleansweep, they can handle 5.1 and many more inputs or outputs for your screen hack solution and they are tiny so they will fit without taking space. If you don`t have the Sony system you may be able to get around the cleansweep altogether and run cheaper high-pass amplifiers. Obviously this is much more than $1500, installer quoted me $5k. I would have loved to do it but I quit my job and I`m going back to school so the $5k is going in the old college fund.

You could probably find people selling their 2015 f150 Sony sub box online at ebay or whatever and find a cheap way of hooking it up for a lil more bass you`ll probably need a lil amp. Then just toss in your efficient JL speakers front and back. This option is a little hacked and I didn`t want to really hack up my brand new lariat.

In the end the Kicker option is probably the best per price and then just add in some efficient JL speakers, if that`s what you like. I`d leave the speakers it`ll sound worlds better with just the extra amplification.

Also there is a single speaker in the centre of the dash. I believe it`s Sync`s speaker so it is best left alone. I have seen custom builds that put a center channel speaker in there for the 5.1 but it`ll blow any budget and push into crazy territory.

Sorry man forgot about the camera question.

The Mytouch Lockpick Air website says it is not compatible with the 360 camera system. Which is what the front camera on the Lariat is used for. You would think if it is just a video signal and camera you would just need to send power to the camera (careful probably not 12v) and put an RCA jack on the output line and hook it up into the Lockpick Air.

With that said I`ve done the factory upgraded grill with my 2010 and its not worth it. I could have gotten a billet aluminum one that is more sturdier and looks cooler (you can get normal looking ones too) for the same price I paid from an online factory outlet parts store. You can bet Ford will up-charge on the one with 360 cams too. And, you can add on an aftermarket backup cam and that will definitely be plug and play with your lockpick air.

Thank you for the reply @theLurker!

$1500 for the kicker system you suggested would be too much for me.

I kind of want to stay on somewhat a tighter budget, especially when I've seen the Kicker Soundsgate for $400 but I know that isn't for the 2015 F150.

I've been doing research on speakers, and from what I'm reading a lot of people like the Polk Audio speakers. I'm not sure if I should do 6x9s in the front or use a converter and just do 6.5 coaxial speakers all around as to which would give me the best bass and overall sound.

I know a lot of people suggest leaving the rear speakers un-amplified and even not even change them out. But I do want it to be loud, and sound good for my passengers as well.

So basically would like to keep the budget for speakers and amp around $500 or so. What's the best set up for loudness and bass that doesn't distort turned all the way up?

I can add subs at a later date. I want to do a fox box, with two 10's. I'm not sure if the sundown Sa subs would work well in that box or not. But maybe I should just go with smaller powered sub that I can hide somewhere.

As far as getting it installed, I know local audio shops charge an arm and a leg. But I have a guy at work that loves to install car audio, and will most likely just install it for the fun of it. He worked at Circuit City for 10+ years, so I'm sure he can install a straightforward setup.

As far as the camera, I know the lockpick states, it doesn't work with the 360 set up, but I took that as it won't integrate it in a birds eye view, and give the look of a 360, but you can switch to each camera individually. Just wondering, because I saw Lariat grill for 300 on eBay with the camera already. They sell the lockpick air with a camera kit, that comes with a front camera that works, but you have to drill your grill for mounting and I don't want to drill my grill. And they say it works best for the Lariat grill since the XLT has a different structure and won't support the camera without reinforcement or something.
