Default 2010 aftermarket stereo upgrade

Hi,
I have a 2010 F150, looking to put in new double din all in one unit.
I keep reading that I need some kind of fancy interface to hook it up.
I don't have the nav system or sync installed.
What is the reason behind getting one of these "interface" modules vs just hooking it up?
Is there just a basic harness somewhere?
thanks

Well, I read this thread
https://www.f150forum.com/f30/2004-2...-basics-49666/
And it indicates that you don't "need" an interface, but I should probably get the wiring harness.
One of the local shops here was trying to sell me something for $358, I thought he said it was an "FRST" by Metra but I can't seem to find one.

My sticky is written for the 04-08. Check out http://www.metraonline.com/ once you confirm the part number, you can use google shopping and ebay to find them for significantly cheaper than retail.

Sorry, yeah I should have mentioned that. I understand that that thread is just for the 2004-2008 models.
I just meant that at least for those models you didn't seem to need the fancy interface and was wondering if it was still the same for the 2010s

I'd have to look at a wiring diagram for the 09+, but I remember reading that the turn on is canbus controlled, and as such you'll need a ignition turn on lead for the radio because it's not in the harness. You could pull the signal from elsewhere in the truck though.

So the 2009 and 2010s are the same?
That would be appreciated if you could look it up.
If a wire isn't easily accesible for that would that mean I would just have to turn on the unit manually?
Any idea what kind a unit they would have been trying to sell me for $358 ?

Generally the interfaces are so you can keep stock function like steering wheel controls, reverse cameras, etc. If you're replacing the HU I don't think one would be necessary. You can pull 12v switched power from the orange/white wire in the passenger kick panel as outlined in this thread:

https://www.f150forum.com/f38/hardwi...ed-help-26595/

From the Metra site regarding their OEM interface:

The FRST interface is for 2007 and up Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles equipped with RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment), Sync, or THX or any combination of the three to retain these features, plus retain the OEM satellite radio (external LCD (XIA-LCD) required, sold separately) if so equipped . Also the FRST can retain the OEM steering wheel control functions as long as the aftermarket radio has a steering wheel control input.
Here's another OE stereo interface, you get it for $65 or so if you buy the HU from Crutchfield:

Thanks for the information.
So if I don't need:
"
Using this interface will enable factory features such as rear seat entertainment
(RSE), rear seat controls (RSC) and the THXII amplifier when the original radio is removed. Other features
of the C2R-FRD1 include data bus driven retained accessory power (RAP), vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
output, illumination, reverse output, parking brake output and a 5 volt regulated amp turn on for factory
installed subwoofers. "
I should be able to get by with just a wiring harness maybe one of these:
Standard Metra 70-5520

Audiophile Metra 70-5521

Yep I think you should be able to get by with just the standard harness.

nice, thanks.
I guess I will have to wait until I pull it to find out which harness, standard or audiophile, I need.
If anyone already has checked it is the single cd unit.
