I wasn't sure if that was your final decision. I'm in cali for the week. I'd love to hear it when your done. I plan on talking with him and moving forward with the system this month.

A sneak peak of some of the progress so far. The box is not nearly as big as it looks in the pics. It's really a challenge to get about .55-.6 cu feet out of a box while still clearing the back seat.

The Sony amp is being relocated to the floor so the back wall area can be used for air space. Just a quick bracket to keep it up off the ground. There will be room for some ambient airflow.

Here's some better pictures of the box being fab'd up. We're going to simplify and change a few things, but you can expect the back to be a fiberglass tray to better fit and get as much air space and depth as we can. And the speaker ring to frame will be fiberglass'd in.

We're not done yet. Still some shape shifting to go. The hope is that my installer can sell these to folks as needed. It will be enough to fit a Fosgate P3 10", a JL TW3 10". Pioneer Shallow 10"... anything that requires roughly .5 cu feet of net air space.

Depth is definitely an issue. we're trying to see how deep we can get this. The JL TW3 is a great woofer to mock up with since it has such a large basket. The P3 and others tend to shrink pretty good.

I heard some regular vs shallow and the shallows really lacked in the low frequency. I want a regular 12....possible?

Sweet! If he's looking to make them for others tell him that there are a lot of us that don't have the Sony amp so he could make it flat across the back floor. Should be simpler and give a bit more airspace for volume.

Shallow speakers in the right enclosure can still sound very good. But, it's hard to beat a 12" in a large ported enclosure.

There are 2 real constraints. 1, airspace. 2, depth. Getting anything much over 4" deep is a challenge because you want some clearance with the back seat for air movement and speaker excursion. Getting enough airspace is another challenge. We feel pretty good about .6 right now. Unless you relocate the jack, more than that is a bit tougher.

I am talking to him about a 10" in a ported enclosure. It would be a hybrid audio 10" driver that needs like 1ish cubic plus the port. Not sure if we can do it, but we are looking at it.

Check out the Image Dynamics ID or the higher end IDQ line. Amazing SQ subs that are built for smaller sealed enclosures.

Mounting Depth is a bigger enemy than box size.

The pictures are a bit deceiving. There isn't as near as much room as one might think their is. The box itself is actually fairly small. The motor for the power slider takes up a bunch of room, and you can't really go taller with a box. You can't really go that much wider either because the brackets that hold seats and seat belts down.

We are maximizing airspace by using fiberglass and 1/2" mdf rather than 3/4. Plus, we are keeping an inch or so of clearance for air movement behind the seat itself.

My requirements were that I wanted to keep full articulation and use of my back seats. The way they move when you fold up restricts depth as well.

The JL TW3 is supposed to be a very nice sub, and is my initial goal. People can then step down to a Rockford p3 to save money, or possibly move up to a 10" hybrid Clarus in a ported enclosure if we can make one.

I really wanted a sundown sd3, but it's just too deep we think

Their subs are incredibly shallow (especially their IDQ Slim Line).

http://www.imagedynamicsusa.net/inde...q-subwoofers-2

the 12 has a mounting depth of 3.47 inches. You also won't find a better quality sub for the money. Excellent company, excellent subs. I highly recommend that you at least consider them. If you'll register on DIYmobileaudio and PM user Majik, he has a shop in Chicago (Sound Ethics if you want to look him up and call directly) and is a dealer for Image Dynamics and has the best pricing around. Seriously, check them out, you WONT be disappointed.

Also, the next step up, the IDQ line, only needs 6 inches for a 12 in woofer, but that sounds like its too much.
