Newbie.
Hi, folks,
I'm new to the site. Was searching for information regarding my 1999 F150 4x4, and found this forum. This looks like a knowledgeable group of people...I think I'll ask them.
I'm a handyman in Pittsburgh and the F150 is my work truck. Yesterday I was on a service call when I heard a solid clunking noise coming from the rear end of the truck. I got out and looked underneath only to find the rear gas tank strap broken and the tank hanging down about 4 inches. So, with some of my general handyman improvising skills, I ran one of my kayak carrying straps around it and pulled it back up into place. Just last week I had heard of the Ford recall on the straps, so I would probably take it to Ford for repair.
Anyway, the clunking noise continued and then some grinding. It didn't sound good. It was more aggravated by slow, stop & go traffic. When traveling under a constant load around 35 MPH, it seemed to be quiet.
For the past week or so I had also been hearing a slight whining from the rear end area. Wheel bearing, maybe?
I limped home and threw it up on the jack stands to pull the axles out and check the wheel bearings. They had some wear but not as bad as I had imagined. New bearings and seals installed. Now I'm trying to get the axles back in the differential. Of course, I have the limited slip differential with this massive spring clip right in the middle of all the c-clip installation area. I'm trying to find a slick way to get it back into the assembly while still maintaining my sanity. I feel I really haven't corrected anything major, so I'm not sure if the problem is still there. The truck has 62,000 original miles. (I've just retired my '97 F150 with 186K miles. I had been searching for this one for almost a year, so I want to keep it.) The parts guys tell me I have an 8.8, with the ten bolt pattern cover. Ford would probably encourage me to buy a new truck, but I would like to find a less costly approach. Any ideas?
Denny
