Well Ive done it now, new from Detroit 'burbs
I just recently aquired my 99 F150 XLT ext cab short box 2WD 4.6L/5sp on trade. I initially thought it would be a good winter beater to bomb around in, but lo and behold I'm here getting ideas and already started improving it.
It's got 229000 miles on it now and climbing. I know little to nothing of it's history, but from working on it and driving it, I'm guessing it's been a MI truck most of its life (lower rust), but its been well taken care of otherwise (excellent interior, shiny orig. paint, no evidence of crash repair, all fluids at good levels and oil was old but not nasty.) Based on this evidence, I'm thinking it spent a lot of time on the highway too. It doesn't leak anything either, which is impressive to me. Years ago, I had a 4.0L 92 ranger with half the miles and it marked every driveway i parked it over, lol. The only thing non-functional is the ebrake, which shall be rebuilt in time.
The more I drive it, the more I like it. I already put a brand new stock replacement grill in it and smoothed and polished the old headlights. I also chromed the upper radiator support brackets and jack rod hooks on them (visited Dad's chrome shop over Thanksgiving weekend
.) I cleaned all the underhood plastic to look like new too.
Maybe its a sickness, I just can't leave anything alone, even an old rusty truck like this one. If I keep it long enough, I'll go ahead and patch up the rust, then paint the bottom satin black or something classy at least. I'd love to own a bagged ride; its on the bucket list, so that's a possibilty as well.
The wheels are MB motoring 20"X?" with 295/50's.
