Default wanting to know what to look for when buying older.

I'm in the process of buying a 97lariat stepside with 5.4. Are there any concerns I should look for before I handover the money? It is also a 4x4. Everything works and all but what I'm asking is is there any manufactuerer possible problems I should be aware of?

I'm not aware of any recalls or issues like that. I would look at the miles per year average as one of the criteria for purchasing an older model rig. I bought my 2002 King Ranch this year and it had 102k miles on it. That basically translates to being driven about 10k per year since the 2002s were introduced in late 2001. I figure that even if it were a first on the lot 2002, it is exactly 10 years old, and therefore it was driven properly in my opinion. (It wasn't averaging 50k per year or more.)

You can check for other signs of wear, I look at brakes, tires, pattern of wear on the tires (if any.) Is there a trailer hitch, if so, is it smaller or is it the larger ones for pulling RVs and such? These will give you a thumbnail peek into the truck's life.

Good luck, and post some pics!
