I loaded my motorcycle on the 2013 F150 truckbed, its longer than the bed, so I drove with the tailgate down. I must have hit a bump somewhere, which lifted the tailgate high enough to release it. When I arrived at my destination the tailgate was hanging on the cables. It got badly dinged up by the tow hitch ball.
My Ford dealer tried to tell me I had not fitted the tailgate properly, but I had never taken it off. He then tried to tell me that someone had tried to steal the tailgate so it wasnt properly attached.
Ford Customer Service said I should not have driven with the tailgate down. I have read the 591 page owners manual and nowhere does it tell me that.
I had no idea the method to take off the tailgate, or how easy it comes off.
I believe that Ford should pay for a fix (hose clamp round the coupler as a minimum) and repair the damage to the tailgate. It would help if they added it to the manual too.
Exactly how many other people have experienced this?
Can we share names and addresses, to strengthen the case against Ford?

Common sense is that a common function of a pickup truck (i.e. driving around with the tailgate down) wouldn't fail spectacularly.
