Default nOOb looking at an f150

Hi, Looking around for a beater truck, found a 1987 f150 un CL in my area for a pretty low price.
It's an extended cab with a flatbed (looks to be a wooden homebuilt, bit well made, as far as I could see in the pictures)
I've never been that big on Ford products, so don't know that much about them.
I'd appreciate any tips on what to watch for as this is a beater, and I'd like to avoid any known major problems.
This is/was a farm truck, supposedly needs an alternator, though it starts and runs? Driver's side window doesn't work, other than that it's supposed to be a good truck.
The amount he's asking is a steal for a running truck ($600) I'd like to make sure it's not a soon to be non running truck

Just make sure it runs and drives shifts good.. It will probably need some maintence done once you get it.. But that is up to you on how much you want to do...

I look for a motor that actually fires and runs without belching smoke. Oil leaks, transmission leaks, rust, the usual stuff. You didn't mention what engine it has, and some problems are engine specific. Good luck and glad you're looking at a ninth generation truck. Can't beat 'em, and for $600 you'll have some cash left to actually fix stuff that you find.

It's a 351 (5.8) engine (in a half ton I'd rather had a six or a 302, but oh, well)
I thought 87 was eighth gen?
Wasn't able to go see it today, owner didn't answer phone. Last I spoke to him he was out of town for a family emergency.
Hopefully soon.
I realy like the look of this truck in the ad pick, flatbed and all. Has a functional look 'I'm a truck, son,I ain't fancy, but I get stuff done'
