Default New from NC with an '88 XLT Lariat, 4WD

Last week, from the original owner, I bought an '88 XLT Lariat, 4WD Supercab. 244,??? miles, straight six, five speed. Numerous interior options as well. I also have a '66 long bed that's slowly disappearing as it hasn't been driven in about 15 years due to excessive oil consumption. I used to restore classic cars, primarily European. All systems including coachwork, paint, wiring, upholstery, driveline and brakes. However, I have nill experience with a 4WD of any sort. I'm hoping to learn of the idiosyncrasies of my truck as well as what to do to improve its function. I don't want a 'prissy' truck, I want a truck that's useful. For whatever reason, this one has peeling factory paint. It's been sitting for about 18 months so I'd like to replace whatever the experience of this forum suggests is wise in order to make it more reliable. Radiator, heater core, water pump, both gas tank pumps and filters have been replaced in the last few years.
TIA for any and all useful suggestions.
David
