New Guy from NJ
Hi All,
Just joined from Northern NJ.
I don't currently have an F150, but I do have a 2005 Ranger 4x4 SuperCab Edge & have been looking at possibly replacing it with an F150.
I currently have just under 35,000 miles on the Ranger & use it mostly for going back & forth to work & sometimes for a ski trip during the winter. I try to split the work commute between my Ranger & my car, a 2003 BMW 325xiT Wagon.
What gets me is that the advertised mileage for the F150 (either EcoBoost or 5.0l V-8) seems to be better than I am getting on my smaller Ranger.
The window sticker for my Ranger (which I kept) says 16 city / 20 highway. It's got the 4.0l V-6, 5 Speed Automatic, 4.10 rear (which I think is where the mileage problem is). I've still got the original Goodyear Wrangler P255/70R16 All-Terrain tires on it.
Overall average MPG since new (all calculated manually after each fill up) is 15.72. My commute to work is about 17 miles each way, all but 1 - 1.25 miles are highway (I-78), about 70 - 75 MPH. I've used the Cruise Control whenever possible, whether in town or on highway.
I just got a letter from the dealer where I bought the Ranger sent a letter saying that they want to buy back my Ranger in trade for a new vehicle. I my go there next Monday (my next day off) & see what they've got in stock & what they will offer from my Ranger, so we will see.

Went in another direction
Well guys, yesterday (Sunday) I took a look around the dealer's lot & found a 2012 F150 that I thought that I would be interested in.
It's a Sterling Gray Metallic Scab with the 5.0l, bucket seats & console. Today, I went back & took it for a test drive, an 18 mile loop consisting of Highway, suburban back roads, & a little city driving. They had only 1 F150 EcoBoost on the lot, a Tuxedo Black Screw, so I took that one on the same route. I am not interested in a black vehicle (too hard to keep clean), so I drove it only to compare the 5.0l to the EcoBoost engines. What surprised me is that I got basically the same MPG (17.5 & 17.8 according to the display) for the 18 mile loop on both vehicles. This was at 65 on the highway & 35 - 40 on the back roads - using cruise control whenever traffic flow allowed it.
I realize that true MPG should be manually calculated after each fill up & averaged over the life of the vehicle (as I have been doing for about 32 years), but I thought that these identical 18 mile loops of mixed driving would give some indication of what to expect in the future.
I also realized that I personally could not justify something the size of an F150 in urban Northeast NJ, so I left the dealership with a 2012 Sterling Gray Metallic Escape with the 3.0l V-6.
So, I'll be seeing you guys...
