Default New to the Forum with Transmission Trouble

Greetings, I am new to the forum and I was hoping any of you Ford Lovers out there can help me out. I have a stock 1986 Ford XLT, 6cy, 4x4, and grannie 4 speed. I want to put a more modern 5 speed M5OD-D2 in place of the old grannie tranny. Has anyone out there ever done this changeover? If you have please give me some advice on which years to use and will my stock transfer bold up to the 5 speed or will I need to get a transfer of the same year of the 5 speed tranny. I know I am going to go with the 11" clutch. I just need someone who has done this before. Also my truck is extended cab with the full 8' bed. Thanks for the advice, John.
