New 2012 F150 Owner
Hello,
I am happy to be driving my first F150. It is a 2012, Crew, Red, 5.0L, XLT. It took me about 2-3 months to find the "right" one. I am a seasoned Ford Ranger Owner/Driver after being behind the wheel of two Rangers over a 15 year period. After my first two weeks with the F150, here are some initial thoughts:
Several things about the F150 took me by surprise. First, the quiet ride. I cannot hear the 5.0L running unless I nail the gas to merge in with traffic. Second: Fuel economy! I can say that according to the in-dash computer info, I am getting 3-4 overall MPG better than what the Ranger (4.0L 2wd) was getting. Finally, I am not one who typically buys into technology trends (e.g. smart phones, apps, etc). But having the SYNC system is a nice surprise. After a friend helped me get the phone connected, I can just hit a button on the wheel, say "Call John", and I never have to take my eyes off the road. Only down side is that it eats up more minutes
Towing: On occasion, I tow a 14 foot utility trailer with lawn and garden equipment. The Rangers pulled it ok, but with the F150....I sometimes forget it is even back there. When towing in the "Tow/Haul" mode, the transmission has an automatic gear reduction that helps slow the truck/trailer down.
I came to respect Ford Trucks 100% over the coarse of 15 years with the Rangers given how few (if any) problems I ever experienced. Now, with the F150, this respect has grown tremendously.
The 2012 is only at about 75K miles. Some things I would like to look into are possible performance enhancements (not that it really needs them), dual exhaust systems, maintenance, and others.
