I'm Back...this time for good!
Hey everyone,
This is going to be long, but I wanted to provide some back story to how and why I'm back!
I was a frequent forum poster (even sold some stuff on here) when I had my '14 XLT 5.0 157" Tuxedo Black. In a semi-stupid move I traded my truck in with 20k miles at the end of July. At the time, my wife's car was having issues and with two promotions it was time for her to get something new!
We were going to lease something for her and I just couldn't justify lease payments around what I was paying to own my truck, it just felt wrong. Planning to go to dealer on a Saturday I came up with a plan(uh-oh) on Friday night about 10 PM that I was going to trade in my truck and her vehicle. In my head, this would lower our collective car payments, allow us to both be in new vehicles, and I was driving more so better gas mileage, and sync 3 really looked like fun .
Mind you I bought the '14 in 01/15 heavily rebated, and with Z plan. Out the door was 31k. I did some quick research and saw dealer was selling an '14 XLT V8 145" with 50k miles for 34k. Armed with that info we went to dealer on last day of the month.
Explained that I was prepared to purchase two vehicles(I wanted an Edge and my wife wanted the Escape), but if we couldn't agree on trade in of truck I wasn't buying ANY vehicles. My guy at dealer perked up and off we went to find an '16 Edge SEL AWD and an '17 Escape SE 4WD!
The Edge was great and had tons of features(leather, push start, remote start, intelligent access, navigation atechie like me was in heaven), fun to drive. Wife was happy with her Escape as well. I got 30k as trade in on f150 and only owed 23k(1k less than I paid and had it over a year and half) so Edge payment was a little less than truck and we were saving a few bucks. Managed to get 9k for a '11 Sonata that had 4 bald tires almost 100k miles and a recall list that was growing every month. I thought I got the steal of the century having them basically buyback my f150 after putting 20k miles on it and driving it for 1.5 years.
Within a few days, the realization that while a beautiful vehicle, the Edge was smaller, but didn't get as good of mileage as I expected (22-24 on 3.5L opposed to my ability to get 19 in the v8) and the center console was killing my knee (I'm 6'5") I was a bit down.
That truck was the first and only vehicle I had ever wanted and I traded it in perfect shape, with a ton of mods (kicker soundstage, peragon cover, bed mat, weathertech mats and mudflaps, led reverse, license plate, cargo, and interior lights, vent visors, tinted 50% up front...the list goes on, whoever bought that got an amazing deal). I realized I had made a mistake, but life happens you learn, and I came to the fact that I'd have to pay this off and one day could get in a truck again. It hurt to even pass an f150 on the road and realize that was what I really wanted to be in.
Sorry for rambling but this is crazy series of events and wanted to give some backstory.
Flash Forward to Thanksgiving week. I had the week off from work and schedule an oil change for the Edge. Got it back and just so happened my new weathertechs arrived! Went up to local wash place to clean out the interior and put mats in and noticed a soaked passenger floor when I lifted out the OEM mat. I immediately called the dealer thinking someone had spilled something in my car. Assured nobody was in passenger side they told me to bring it back day before Thanksgiving.
Wednesday I drop it off, they tell me it's probably clogged AC evap line (common issue) and they'll have it done around 1.
1 comes and goes and I hear nothing, 2 comes and goes still nothing. 2:30 I call and speak to someone (not my advisor) who says he doesn't have all the info, but I'm not getting the car back today and they are trying to find me a rental
Advisor calls me around 3 to tell me that they have identified FOUR leaks in and around the dash, A Pillar, Windshield. I was in shock, I'm usually able to stay calm, ask the right questions and handle the situation. I was speechless this was a brand new 40k MSRP vehicle with 7k miles on it, that was basically a glorified pasta strainer! After arguing over rental and wanting something comparable for holiday travel they managed to find me a Crew Cab Ram 1500 (not gonna complain about driving a truck) I take it and figure worst case I get to drive this for a few days. I get the truck and go to dealer to pick up some stuff and that's when it really hits me.
My car is in pieces seats are out, trim is all removed, carpet peeled back...Advisor says they found mold and still need to remove the entire dash, rear seat, windshield and do electrical tests to see if anything is damaged. Again in shock I don't say much and leave. After talking to some friends and family over the holidays and explaining all this, the sentiment is pretty much the same. Not one person said they'd have kept this car if it was them.
In agreement, I decided to go in on Saturday and see what sales could do for me(mind you at this point i've purchased an f150, an edge, and an escape in the span of a year and a half).
This is turning into a novel so I'll wrap it up and leave out most of the rest unless someone has questions but:
I told them I wanted to get a '16 F150 and what were we gonna do about my Edge that was in pieces in the shop. I had no idea what my options were as far as buyback, etc. They offered to start arbitration process (I need to find out what happened with that car, last I heard Ford was sending someone out to look at the car and figure out wtf happened) but I didn't want to as that type of stuff can draw on forever and just got done dealing with it in a different aspect of life, it's emotionally draining to deal with court or any type of hearings. I wanted to be done with this bad decision and not have to worry about leaks out of warranty or MAYBE a buyback in 2-3 months after dealing with crap. So I asked to trade it in. Away we went on numbers for the truck.
In the end....
They paid my Edge off, credited me my monthly payments I had made, gave me back my down payment + $1000. With the incentives at end of November I was able to get a 16' 2.7L XLT Sport 302A. Financed 33k. OTD was 36k MSRP was 51k with options. Payment is 80$ more than my old truck, which is ok to me. I consider the XLT Sport to be the 09-14 version of an FX4, console shift 8" screen etc. So $80 more for a trim package higher + all the other goodies that I had in my Edge and was used to (nav, remote start, and most importantly new aluminum body!)
Ok i'm finished now, it's been a crazy couple of weeks, but to say I'm anything other than ecstatic to be back on here and in an f150 would be a lie! Won't be modding for a bit as I wasn't exactly planning on buying this vehicle and was fully expecting to keep the edge until it was paid off, but I do have 3D Maxpyder Front and Back Mats, LED License Plate bulbs, and wheel well liners. Other than that just some ForScan mods for now until next year!
