87' F150 XLT stuck in park. Help?
My key turns freely in the column ignition and unlocks the steering wheel, but the starter won't engage and the column shifter is stuck in park.

There is a pot-metal casting in the column that engages the switch cluster located near the bottom of the column by your feet, via a long rod. Mine broke, and I had the same situation you did. IIRC, have to pull the steering wheel.

im willing to bet that is exactly what it is. ya pull the steering wheel, and then the cover on the column. cant remember for sure, but i think u have to pull the ignition out as well.

I needed only to replace the casting piece inside the collar. The long rod connects to this piece. Apparently, it's a common failure - the Ford parts counter guy knew exactly what I needed without too much description.
I think spdkilz is right - the ignition lock cylinder will have to come out also. There is a trick / sequence to doing this, something about turning the key to a certain position - perhaps other members can help out.
Be sure to mark the steering wheel so it goes back on in the same position that it came off.
