Default 4 wheel drive gets stuck

I am new at this so bear with me please I have an '03 F150 4X4. Twice when I had to put it in 4 wheel (once last winter and then again this summer) it would not go back in to 2 wheel. When I put it in reverse, it made a high pitch squealing sound and would not move. After attempting to get it out of 4 wheel a few times it finally worked. This does not get used very often and I was wondering if that has something to do with it.

I have a 2005. I experienced a similar situation (in 4low only, 4hi never gave me an issue). I referred to the owner's manual in the glove box. It instructed me to place the truck in park, turn the dial to 2high, and wait for the indicator to go off. So that's what I did. sometimes it takes a long time... like a full 4-5 minutes. I get ancy and shift from P to N and then coast forward a couple inches then put it back in park but it never helps. So I just wait...

Wish I had 4 on the floor like my last truck..
