What would it take to save these rims? Seem very pitted, to the point they need serious repair. Can they be saved with polished and buffing?

These could be greatly improved and saved, the question is are you ready to spend lots of time and get messy?
You will need to sand back the Aluminum agressively and then work down to 3000grit, likely starting with 1000. You can then polish them back to a bright shine. Then the choice to either clear them, or be a slave to the wheels on a monthly basis or sooner to stay up on them.
You could send them out to be done but they will likely cost a pretty penny.
OR
Take some really top tier polishes and use them to get back what you can, the deep pitting will not go away however. I would suggest Gliptone, Rolite, Nuvite or other varied grit polishes/compounds for metals.
Cheers,
GREG

Try using some 0000 steel wool with soapy water. My dealer recommended that to get the corrosion off my running boards and aluminum clad wheels. No scratches and they look like brand new.
